Default 6.4 Questions

I own the 7.3 and I love it. but my dad is interested in buying a new truck. I was wondering if the 6.4 has been having any problems, and if it is reliable. He would be using it for pulling out 28ft car trailer, and snowplowing. we have been looking around and we cant decide what to get.

I would stick with the 7.3 if you plan on not modding the 6.4. Your fuel mileage is going to be about half than what it is now with your 7.3, especially towing.

Everything I'm reading on these forums is that if you chip the 6.4 and get rid of the DPF, the 6.4 really shines in HP and fuel mileage.

The 07-2010 ford 6.4, cummins 6.7, and duramax 6.6L all can potentially have fuel dilution issues. The regeneration process for the DPFs involves injecting raw fuel in the exhaust stroke to burn and clean the filter. Problem is some of this fuel can find its way down the cyclinder walls.
I don't know how big of an issue it is yet. OEM's may be backing their oil intervals down from where they are if they haven't already. I heard a rumor Dodge was going back to 3000 miles but can't confirm that.
So, just one issue to be aware of. Not a big deal if changing oil often. Also not a concer if someone removes the DPF either

i would go with a 6.4 then. put a sct programer, intake, exhaust and dpf/doc delete and your dad will have all the power in the world to pull that trailer or plow any snow

all a matter of opinion i guess
i had an 08 with the 6.4
the thing went through 3 radiators
the pump to pull the air pockets out of the tanks busted and it blew a motor
all of that on top of a constant steady 4 mpg towing
i went in to the ft mac oilsands ONCE and the dual fenderwells pulled out and rubbed against the tires. they were toast in a matter of 1 mile
it pulled ok.
but i will tell you this... ford is gonna have to really do some heavy duty upgrades to their tough truck for me to ever even think about looking at one to think about buying it

my opinion go find an 06 ram with a 6 sp

Everybody has heard of a horror story on all the brands. Either its the radiators and mileage(ford) the suspension and body(dodge) or electrical and injection problems(chevy). Just stick with what you like. My 6.4l had the above problems but Ford fixed that right a way. This is a beautiful motor with the chassis to match and as you all can see by reading and youtube, its a force to be reckoned with. RE: Rudys Performance and/or Spartan if you dont believe me.
