Default first diesel

First of all thank-you for reading my post. I've thought long and hard about whet section I would post this in and decided on the ford one so please don't turn this into a brand bashing thing. Full disclosure is that I'm a gm man. I currently drive a 5.7 silverado and a ls1 car. My family is expanding and the truth is an extended cab truck isn't going to cut it anymore. I'd like to buy a nice crew cab short bed 4x4. I will drive the truck back and forth to work and occasionally drag race it. Whatever I get will be moddified with the goal being a real 12 second pass.
I would really like to have a lbz truck. However I work at a dealer and if I buy a car off of one of our lots I would basically get it for what they gave on trade-in. An lbz comes around maybe once a month but there are currently 10 6.4 psd's to be had. I worked at a ford dealer when the 6.0l was going into new trucks and there is no freaking way I would own one. My question is would I be happy with the 6.4l? Is every repair really going to require the cab off? I'm open to owning a ford but I don't want to make the investment if I'm going to get burned by it. Thanks again for reading my long post.

I dont know on maintenance of the 6.4l a buddy of mine has a friend who has one and has studs, deletes, headgaskets, tuner, and some other stuff and i think he put down almost 1000 ft/lbs. On the dyno i dont know whats all done nut i listed what i do know is done. Hes dumped some serious money into it.

im not worried about maintanance just major repairs and upgrades as well as longevity. i just want something thats comfortable and i can beat on at the strip without having to worry about major repairs. i will most likely never haul anything bigger than a car trailer but i will daily drive it. i also work as mechanic for an asian vehicle maker but has little experience with a diesel.

Well part of maintenance is major repairs like head gaskets of they g
O,turbos, injectors etc. I know you said you didnt want a brand war but look into a dodge cummins cheap to fix, easy to fix, and most things you can do yourself

im trying to avoid the major repairs. from what ive read and researched the lbz is fairly reliable as long as you keep it under 650hp or so. im assuming that im going to have to buy a transmission whatever brand i chose because i do plan on doing hard 4wd launches. i just know little to nothing about actual unbiased reviews of the 6.4l when hotrodded. most everything ive heard is "ford rocks chevy sucks" or something like that. I also looked into the 6.7 cummins a little but have heard alot of mixed reviews. i do like the idea of working on a inline 6 though. and only buying 6 injectors is welcoming too.
