Default truck smoking

Here is the smoke. I was talking about the y pipe that attaches to the exhaust manifolds that goes to the turbo. I had to give it some 2X4 love but it is ok . The smoke is not. As I said I didnt have a tuner on it and I just got the tunes now and am going to upload one in and see how it does. My fear is it is still the head gaskets. Heads where checked, new oem ford gaskets, and studded. Mind you the people that did the install are the same ones who left the tape on the intake but how do you mess that up. Forgot to use a torque wrench? I would get a little upset if that was the case.

I will let you know if there is a change with the tuner.

Still has small exhaust leak and getting contribution code for #6. Gonna fix exhaust leak and check intake manifold for leaks. Wondering about seals in turbo will check end play tomorrow as well.

You need to get out of the truck and smell what that exhaust smells like when it's burning white like that. Could be coolant, or it could be fuel. My quick guess now is fuel if you're getting a #6 cylinder contribution code, but hard to tell from here. Smell it, it will tell all.

It is oil. There is pressure in my engine. Question is is it from the new valve seals or from the turbo seal is my question. Compression is good on all cylinders. My compression tester gauge tops out at 300 psi and I maxed it way past that. Yeah I got the ypipe tight as well it was where the ypipe bolts to the exhaust manifold on the passenger side. nothing a ratchet strap and a long wrench couldn't fix.

Are you using a diesel specific compression tester? A 6.0 will need 350-400psi in the cylinder to start and run... it could be more than that though, so maxing out a 300psi gauge sounds right.

I highly doubt it's oil that is coming out of the exhaust. If it is, it could be a turbo seal.

My guess is still fuel, but I'm not there to smell the exhaust. A lot of times when fuel leaks into the exhaust, it mixes with the soot that is in there and makes it appear to look like oil. It really needs to be smelled.

Yeah my buddies, 1 police officer on a bike, and myself, got a real good smell, we thought it was funny but he didn't LOL. They take pollution pretty serious in CA. We all agree its oil burning and that I wont drive the truck till its fixed.
I did a balloon test on the fuel lines coming from the heads and they where good no black soot on the new filter either. I was checking the wiring going to the vgt solenoid and strangly it seemed as if someone had striped about a 1/4 inch off both lines at the same location, maybe to test the harness, and then twisted the two together and wrapped electrical tape around them. I straightened that out but noticed no different still has lag and motor still smokes. The turbo is less than 5k miles on the ford reman. Sometimes it will start to spool then fall off then catch again other times itll shoot to the moon and the truck runs ok then right around the 30 psi mark on the factory boost gauge itll break all up rela bad and when I stop it will blow white smoke bad.
I also pulled the intercooler boots off the intercooler by the aircleaner and it had oil in it. I mean it wasnt flooded by any means but... I will also say that when I got it back from the shop and started reworking there work, there was oil in the intercooler. I only noticed it because it dripped on the ground a little when it was sitting but I didnt think much of it. When the last turbo went out there was oil everywhere in the intercooler in the pipes under the boots and it didnt spool at all. I assumed a little oil there is normal. If it where the turbo that would make sense as to the symptoms but for the fact that its only been in just over a year. If the vgt was not working could it blow the seals? Would that force exhaust and oil from the turbo into the both the intercooler and through the drain tube into the oil system cause the extra pressure? Would explain the poor turbo performance. I assumed that was because the truck was running poorly.

There's always going to be oil in there, since the crank case vents into the intake in front of the turbo, and thus makes it's way into the CAC tubes and the intercooler.

Now, the wires tied together that are supposed to operate the VGT aren't making much sense. When you said they were stripped I immediately thought whoever before you had hooked up a "smoke switch" to it...

It sounds like the turbo isn't working though, which is either a VGT issue, or possibly the EPB sensor too.

If the turbo vanes are not cycling the turbo will not work properly and back pressure goes through the roof. It could lead to blown headgaskets.

From your description it sounds like it's working, but intermittently. Have you tried removing the EPB sensor and tube at all lately? I'd take those off and clean them real well. As for the smoke... tough to say. I still find it hard to believe it's oil, but it's possible. Oil is typically a blue color when being burnt.

I will pull the ebp tonight and go through that. Will also check those wires again and make sure they are not shorted and that they are still having a signal going across them. My coolant level hasn't changed no oil present there either nor pressure. The nozzles are new and they did a lot of testing on the injectors to make sure they where good.

Ok so the turbo was caked up. Not the normal cake from what I have researched mainly oil. looks like the seal blew. The y pipe was clean a little carboned up but dry. the down pipe to the 4" exhaust was saturated with oil. The exhaust side of the turbo is saturated with oil. The fresh air side was not that bad but on the fresh air side the turbine started to grind into the housing just a little bit. Could the seals being bad leave exhaust pressure or turbo pressure enter into the block via the oil drain tube?

Sounds like the turbo is shot bud. Sounds like the bearings are going out (if the wheel is making contact with the housing) and wiping the seal out with it. It's only going to get worse from here. It should be replaced. I've actually seen some trucks catch on fire with a bad turbo seal as the oil drips down in it and the exhaust gets hot...

Yeah that's what I was looking at. It runs much better seems like it takes a bit for the hpop to clear up the injectors when the truck has sat for a little bit. When I unplug the icp sensor it seems to run better? Brand new sensor to. Have to figure that out. Had a little bit of carbon in the ebp buy wasn't to bad.

Default wiring

ok mdub here we go. Turbo was shot though shaft was good orings blown out. installed new pmax and fixed a few other things along the way. All wiring harness issues. Was running good and had some more wiring issues today the wires going up to the vgt are bad the wires going to the pigtail to the icp sensor are bad. I am running out of wire to make repairs on. Is it best to buy a new harness? I have already replaced the glow plug harness's and the injector harness.
