Fuel filter change tricks and tips for the 6.0 powerstroke

Fuel filter changes are something most diesel guys will experience on their trucks at some point or another. Anyways, here's some quick little tips to make the change a little easier on a 6.0 powerstroke, and a way to save some money!

EDIT* The new P/N for the filters from International is 1847170C94

If you go to Ford to order your filters you'll quickly learn they're over $100. You can also get Motorcraft filters from Advanced Auto for about $55. Other than Ford filters you really need to be careful what you're buying, a lot of the aftermarket units do not have the water membrane on the frame filter. So it is recommended to use the Ford filters (also to avoid warranty issues, not that you'd need those with a 6.0 haha) Anyways... what a lot of Ford dealers dont want you knowing is the same filters they sell at their parts counter can be had at the International dealer for a lot less. Once customers found this out, Ford had International change their part numbers. So using the old part number your International guy will ask you if you have a Ford, and then tell you they cant sell you those filters. Change the last digit on the P/N from a 2 to a 3, and whala, you can get the International filters. The new P/N is 1847170C93 (the old number is 1847170C92, and some International shops that dont sell a lot of these may have the old part number on the shelfs still...) These international filters retail from $33-$40. I got mine for $37.50, plus shipping, but we buy in bulk to save... THIS IS THE EXACT SAME FILTER SET AS THE FORD DEALERSHIP HAS AND SELLS FOR A MASSIVE PROFIT!

Here's a pic of the P/N from the International filter box:

Now a trick to make your fuel filter changes easier and quicker (which comes in handy in emergency situations and you're lacking tools...)

On the frame mounted filter, there is a plug for the water drain. This plug is a PITA to get at, and requires an allen wrench that is small enough to squeeze between the pump and the driveshaft for the front. International sells a brass plug with a knurled knob on the end for finger tight removal and installation. It also has an "extension" so when its unscrewed to drain, it doesn't fall out. This plug retails from International for ~ $14.50

Here's a pic of the brass plug...

You can see it comes with a new rubber o-ring as well.

Here's a comparison to the factory cast plug...

Nice, same filters and cheaper price is always good in my book.

I copied this off of a local forum I posted it on. No need to get it from me guys, it wouldn't make sense.

I have since got the FORD part number for that knurled brass knob, so I can get that for you.

As far as the filters, your best bet is to just go to the local international shop. :c:

I wouldn't save you anything once we paid for shipping for everyone.

Just talked to international about these and apparently they've changed the filter kit part # to 1847170C94, was 93

Right, I believe Ford told them to do this, because too many people were catching on and stopped buying the $115 filters from Ford. They may even ask you what it's for, and I'm quite certain they have something that pops up on their screen that says they wont work for 6.0 powerstrokes, but it's all BS. Thanks for the P/N update! I'll fix the original post now. Appreciate it!

Just spoke with the local IH dealer - They can't look it up with that number - need to use the other number shown on the box

Parts guy told me IH number almost always ends with a letter followed by two numbers

Also the fuel filters are $40.00
