Default different turbos?

i have a 2004 ford superduty, previously owned a 2006 a few years back and the 06 seemed to have more of a turbo whistle. was wondering if they used a different turbo on the 2004 than on the 2006 fords?

2003 had it's own turbo
2004 had it's own turbo
2005+ had their own turbo.

The only thing that changed was the vane count on the exhaust side.

2003 was a 10 vane design and had a LOT of whistle. This is a popular "upgrade" for a lot of 04-07 owners. Ford changed it because of customers complaining about too much whistle. These customers were clearly not anyone on this site... However we represent a small portion of those guys buying new diesels. It's possible your 06 has this 03 turbo on it, or it may have the cat/muffler missing? Can't really say without having the truck in front of me.

I believe the 04 turbo went to like a 13 vane setup and the 05+ went to 15 maybe? Don't quote me on those, I know the 03 had 10 vanes for a fact though.

Cutting out the resonator (when pipe went horizontal, before cat) in my 03 made it SCA-REAM! There are two types of people out there, those who LOVE it and those who HATE it. There is no middle ground. Of course at truck pulls I get the extra tech eye when I tell them its the OEM turbo.

Where would I go about getting an '03 turbo? Are they still VGT? Were there any problems?
