Got a question. I have asked my brother this and he said he didtn really know as he lets his truck warm about about 5 minutes or more before leaving in the morning. My question is I got in my truck this morning. Started it up and let it run for about 1 minute before taking off. I go to get on the freeway which is a slight uphill merging lane and the truck wouldnt get past 40 mph for about 1 to 1 1/2 miles. Its completly gutless sometimes in the morning. Should I let it warm up longer? Or is there something else I should know about? The turbo spools . It just wont get up and go till its warmed up it seems. This has been pretty much going on since I bought the truck. It was just really bad this morning. So I just kinda figured it was something diesels do. ( my first diesel) Kinda a complete 180 from my old gasser I had. Ran best when cold and shitty when hot.

 

It's a safety feature built into the VGT, it won't open the vanes and start to build full boost until the engine is at operating temperature. Another good reason to let it warm up is because if you don't then there isn't any warm free flowing oil going through the bearings on the turbo, same thing with letting it cool down, if you shut the truck off after (I wouldn't say abusing it) being hard in the throttle, the turbo is spinning at around 20-30k RPM and when you shut down the turbo has to spool down with no oil going through it and if the EGTs are too high when you turn off, whatever oil that is in the turbo will get cooked. If you can't afford 5-10 minutes for a full warmup, at least be easy on her until she's good, you won't have much power, she'll be a bit sluggish.

 

Thanks for the info. Just ahd to make sure ti want somethign else.. have had the truck a year now and still learing everything I can about it. Think Im going to go buy a remote starter so i can get it warmed up for a few minutes before I take off in the mornings. I do know about letting the turbo cool down before shutting it off. First thing my bro told me to do when I got it. Thanks again.

 

I've never heard that. My boosts like normal taking off when it's cold...

 

Yea mine does that too. I figured it was a diesel thing too. It doesn't get out of it's own way if I don't let it warm up enough.

 

A cold diesel wont make much power regardless. Cylinder temps are what keeps the fuel burning.
