Default HEAD STUDS

So i'm about to do my EGR delete kit along with a new oil cooler. Before i do dive into it i am considering going ahead and doing the head studs. is is it a pain in the A$$ to get the heads off or are there clearance problems in getting them off?

Are you keeping the cab on? You will need to take nearly everything off the top of the motor, and discharge the A/C system. The drivers side head can be a pain because the factory bolt will hit the firewall closest to the drivers side of the truck. You will need to find a way to cut it without getting crap all over the engine valley, or dent the firewall in with a pipe and hammer. Most just dent the firewall, you can peel back the insualtion and do it, so you'll never see it when it's done. You will need to take the wheels off and the inner fender liners to make room to get in there to lift them off, they weigh about 100lbs a piece. If you do take them off, make sure you don't set them down flat, or you'll damage the glow plugs. Make sure you have a reputable machine shop deck them and pressure check them. Don't remove more than .008" from them, or they're scrap.

Check out duecer's link titled "and we have liftoff" it will give you a good idea of whats involved in pulling heads and the nightmare that the passenger side head is. If you have access to a lift pulling the cab is always an option...
