Blowing blue smoke.
I have a 05 with 117k on it. It started blowing smoke after it idles a little bit. But once you drive it a ways it clears up. It is not all the time though. But if you set at a long stop light it will blow smoke till about 1500 rpm in the first three gears then clears up for the rest of the gears. It is starting to get worse over time though. Just wanting to get it fixed before something else goes wrong. It does still have the erg on it and has not been chipped. It is completely stock. The radiator will hold pressure for several days after driving it which makes me believe the head gaskets are still good. The smoke smells like unburnt diesel fuel but not to sure. Any help is appreciated. Thank you.
For starter, what is to worry about the cooling system is sweats around the Dugas cap or when engine is cold and you open the Dugas cap on the reservoir and pressure releases and/or low coolant, then I would be worried. But I don't think is is your problem. And your smoke would be white with a sweet odour.
Blue smoke is generally oil burning from either first and usual suspect, the turbo seals are going leaking oil in the intake or bad valve seals or bad piston rings.
But only way to really know is if you can take off the intake boost tube off that connects to the intake manifold 90* elbow and see if there is fresh oil residue around it. If so the culprit may definitely be your turbo. But check also to, but I highly doubt it though, is to look also at the intake tube that half way between the air filter and turbo, going to the turbo. Take that off too, because you ll see that the crankcase ventilation is connected there, and those can dump oil in the intake system. But see again if the oil in it is fresh and really oily, but if not and its just a thick oil residue then that not the problem.
So fresh oil intake tube at the intake manifold elbow and fresh oil in the other tube where crank vent, then it's the crank vent filter that needs replacement or just vent it into the atmosphere (I do that now). But if fresh oil is only at the boost tube at the intake manifold, then it's the turbo. But if it's neither, then, this nothing much to do, it may be bad valve seal or rings. To know which you need to do a compression test to see if you got a weak cylinder. But if not, then valve seals.
