EGR cooler?

EGR cooler?
I have a 2006 F250, 6.0L. I havent had many problems but only had it a little over a year now. Besides replacing the FICM, as the mechanic told me thats what it was, it didn't change much, still idled funny afterwards. But that was 9 months ago and havent had any problems until the other day. In the last month I took a 250 mile trip, then wrench light came on but went back off, came back on and went off again. The other night it started over heating, hurried home and put coolant in it. Started blowing through coolant pretty quickly. Well, not knowing much about diesel engines, I didnt think anything of it. Then check engine light came on, got the code ran and it said EGR valve malfunction. So i pulled EGR and it was gunked up and was wet. Still cleaned it but its still blowing a lot of white steam or smoke. Pulled it back out and noticed the EGR cooler had gunk in it and was wet. Is it safe to assume its a cracked EGR cooler? And if so, can I replace the cooler without buying a new valve? Or what all do I need to do to it to make it run smoothly again. Dont really know much about EGR delete but I was told you need a programmer if you do delete it. I dont have a programmer, truck is straight up stock, no mods besides straight pipe. Thanks in advance for any help.

your egr COOLER RUPTURED, and I guarantee it ruptured because the oil cooler is clogged and will limit how much/if any/ coolant gets to the EGR cooler. when not enough coolant passes through the egr cooler it can rupture because the coolant will steam and crack the cooler. Honestly a delete is the best thing but it will throw a wrench lite all the time unless you have a programmer like the SCT, you can get them with some mild tunes that will provide better drivability and better mileage. Make sure you rebuild the oil cooler and add a coolant filter/the lack of which is what causes the oil cooler to clogg.

The upgrade EGR cooler will cost more then the delete and programmer FYI, If you can live with the little wrench lite being on then you can do the delete then add the programmer later, it should not affect the driveability, and yes rebuild the oil cooler and THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS TO ADD A COOLANT FILTER or you will have to rebuild the oil cooler again sometime in the future.

You can check out Ebay, have deletes for around $100 and oil cooler for around $100. some auto parts stores even carry the Doorman oil cooler for these motors and the price should be just over $100. Alot of guys like the SCT programmer with custom tunes from Innovative Diesel or others, just don't go power crazy, tell them you are all stock and they should hook you up with some efficient toons
