Question basic performance?

ok so here the thing. what can i do performance wise to make my truck a lot more snappy. I installed a 4" afe turbo back straight pipe. now what? i've read problems with the 6.0 popping head gaskets and the diesel shop told me to make reliable performance and not worry about the heads on this, it would take 7k just in head work ( milling, re studding, and removal and install with all new gaskets). does that sound right? also i have read about the egr systems failing if pushing to much power? correct? its hard going from a 11.2 1/4 car to a heavy beast... any ideas? i really do not want to spend a ton of money either. ( im not saying i would want my truck to be a 11 second truck either.) just something rather snappy and quick.

thank you!

SCT with custom tunes. You may blow gaskets, you may not. Some stock trucks will do it. Hard to say. $7k is an absolutely outrageous price. My buddy paid about that amount at a Ford shop for all of that work and that included 2 new heads ($1100 a piece is the going rate I believe). Insane.

There are some other good powerstroke specific shops that can hammer them out quicker and for a lot less money. Where are you located?

I gotcha. I'm up in Milwaukee wi. So if I build the heads my 6.0 would be bullet proof? I would do a egr delete and fully built heads. Also question on the sct tuner I could install it and put in a low setting for gas mileage and a little like stage 1. Would I still pop a gaskets.

I had my heads done in Denver colo at Mountain High Performance. The put there big vale kit in them hardened seats new guides ported the exhaust bowls decked .005 checked for cracks and a-ringed them. They finished by cryrogentic treating all parts for around 3800. The power difference from stick is noticeable to the seat of you pants. Also bill and patric are great to deal with. The rest of the parts I got at Bullet Proof Diesel and dealer with Andrew. Could ask for better service and tech support. After all said and did I have about 10,000 or better to make it right now the bed plate is leaking!

$7k is ABSOLUTELY redonculous!!! You can have the heads decked at a machine shop for a few hundred a piece. Studs, gaskets, oil cooler and EGR you can do yourself for about $2k if you don't do a remote oil cooler, add a coolant filter, FASS, SCT programmer, blue fuel spring and gauges to that and you'll be looking at good reliable power for $3500 not including your heads (which may be perfectly fine or may need a little shave)

Hmm a lot to think about. What about a cold air intake worth it?

No, not really. Not until you start really pushing air through it. A stock filter should be more than adequate for around 500hp, or so they say. You wont really notice anything with it anyways.

The heads themselves really aren't the problem, so to speak. It's the weak 4-bolt per cylinder head design. We try and work with by decking the heads ultra flat, new OEM head gaskets, and ARP head studs instead of the wimpy stock TTY bolts (torque to yield).

so basically, out of what ive read and from the info on here. I should start putting my funds towards decking and new head bolts and gasket matching? what if i just did new head gaskets and different head bolt(s) like the ARP you speak of? then a sct tuner and egr delete? does that sound good?

Stay away from Black Onyx headgaskets, OEM only.

ARP head studs, new OEM gaskets are a good start, but you shouldn't even bother doing this job without having the heads decked. If the heads aren't flat, the job is a waste of time.
