Default 2006 F350 Powerstroke Questions

Hey everybody,

My buddy has a 2006 Ford F350 Powerstroke. I was trying to get him into a programmer but he said a diesel mechanic told him (now I’m sorry for the lack of information) that the 2006 trucks had “something on the engine with only 6 bolts that all the other years had like 14 bolts, and a ‘chip’ would make it shake more and rattle it loose”.

Again… I realize how dumb I sound, but this is word for word. LOL
Any ideas what he’s talking about?

Thanks!

Frustrating talking to people who like to offer advice on a subject they know 1/2 the information on?

6.0's have 4 bolts per cylinder factory, clamping the head to the block. Most others (7.3) have 6. The 6.0 had 4 bolts per cylinder from 2003-2007 for every single engine. At no point did any 6.0 have any more or any less. It's considered a design flaw in the diesel world because of how easy it is to pop headgaskets on these. It's easily fixed with good machine work to the heads and some ARP head studs.

6.0's don't even use "chips" so when I hear someone say that I know they know nothing about 6.0's (pointing this at the "diesel mechanic", not you). Making it rattle and shake more? What an idiot.

What it WILL do is add more fuel/boost and timing. The timing will increase cylinder pressures and make it easier to pop the gaskets, yes. So he was KIND of right, but not really.

Mdub strikes again. Good job buddy.

I have an 06 that does not have the head stud remedy, and i have been running custom tunes for thousands of miles, and havent had any issues. If you spend the money correctly, and buy good tunes, you can run quite a few miles with no harm done. With that said, the 6.0's are notorious for blowing gaskets, even stock trucks.

Qualified mechanics that really know these engines are few and far between. There is a shop here that down right refuses to work on any 6.0 because of the "liability" which says to me that they have no clue what they're doing. A few other shops have gotten a bad rep because they just throw parts at it and hope for the best (it's not warranty work so they don't care, they're making money). Only one guy locally specializes in the 6.0 and knows exactly how they tick and can diagnose most problems within an hour or so. Did I mention he's mobile (and drives a 6.0 that my truck could only dream of being)? Too many people will pull something out of their tailpipe to sound like they know their but are too lazy to do some research and learn that these are actually pretty simple engines to work on once you know the details.
