Ex rear AC questions

I just bought a 03 Excursion and today was the first hot day that I could test the AC. While the dash vents blow cold air the rear vents blow weak air and it is not cold. Any ideas on what could be the cause/problems? Is it a completely separate system or is it connected to the front.
