Turn Up An Injection Pump On An 84 6.9 Diesel
#11
My dad just bought an 86 F250 with a 6.9L diesel equiped with a hypermax turbo kit. It has new batteries in it and has no problems starting in -10* nebraska winter weather. he cycles the glow plugs twice and on the second cycle he cranks the engine. Runs a little rough for a few seconds but what early cold diesel doesnt. He has the block heater on a timer also. Its only on for 4 to 5 hours. The thing runs like a dream!!

Best way to test glow plugs is with a 2 amp battery charger. Clamp the ground on the wrench part if they're out of the engine, if not find a good spot on the engine. Touch the positive clamp on the tit-where the wire plugs onto it. If you need a little further reach, find a small welding electrode. If it sparks heavy, it's good. If it's a small to moderate spark, it's going. If there is no spark, it's dead.

Turn up the 6.9
Hey all you have to do is remove a little cover on the side of your 6.9s distributer pump and turn the motor over till you can fit a pocket screw driver in a machined slot in the pump cam then turn the adjustment screw a quarter of a turn and your done then your pump is maxxed out just to warn you its hard to get at and the screw is very hard to see you might have to take your pump off but add a cold air intake, free flowing exhaust and that 6.9 might just surprise you then when you get the money down the road you can go get more expensive upgrade i hope this helps you out on your 6.9

you don't stick no screw driver in there. It's an allen wrench. you must have a pretty fancy screwdriver.

Also, you can go further than a quarter of a turn. you can turn it in a couple of whole revolutions. She'll put down the smoke, but if that's what you want, that's what i'll do.

The way i've always learned form my father who has been a ford mechanic for 35 years and the way they taught me in the ford A.S.S.E.T. program to test glow plugs is to simply disconnect the glow plug connector and attach a test light to the positive side of your battery and touch the tip to where the connector goes and if your test light lights up your plug is good.
And the Allen head to turn up the pump is either a 9/32 or 5/32.

I dunno how bad the pistons are, at 4500+ rpm they hit valves with stock springs. One of the two is responsible for my light throttle miss. I still drive it everyday so its not too catastrophic. As soon as I find stiffer springs my turbo is going on. Note to the kids, mud bogs are hard on equipment.
