Default 2WD to 4WD SAS

Okay, sometime down the road I would like to convert my 1986 F250 2WD to 4WD with a SAS. Please don't tell me just buy a 4WD, my truck has a lot of sentimental value to me and if it is going to cost as much to convert it to 4WD as it would be to buy a 4WD I would rather convert it.

So is doing a SAS on a 2wd the same as on a 4wd other than having to deal with the transfer case and driveshafts? As I understand it you can use the coil buckets that are stock on a 2WD? Does anybody have a link to someone showing how they do it?

Thanks for any help

if you want the weak D44 axle, yes you can use the coils. but for the d60 you will need to swap to leafs. i have done this swap 3 times now. at this point i can have it back on it's wheels in one weekend. buy a junk donor 4x4 f350 and swap away.

I think I like the looks of leafs better after finding this build thread Project Ol' Blue 2WD SAS - Pirate4x4.Com

Finally found pics of somebody showing how they did it!

My neighbors house is basically a ford junk yard, they might have an old F350 that will work. I'm friends with him and his son so I might be able to get a deal on just taking the stuff I need. Last year he couldn't buy anymore trucks because if he had he would of had to of gotten a dealers license

Thanks for the heads up, my dad told me today that the guy has been hauling off a bunch of his old parts trucks off to the scrap yard so I might have to hustle. Hopefully me being good friends with him and him hauling stuff off for scrap maybe I can get a deal. Might even be able to trade some farm hand work to lower the price if has what I need.

It will be a while before I do the swap, when I do projects I slowly gather the parts that I need. But when and if I ever do the swap I will try and document it as a resource for anybody else that wants to try it.

I knew I wasn't the only one that did that.
