Default 86 6.9 ford trouble

my oold girl might have quit. i got a 6.9 thats no longer fireing, I know the glow plugs are good, just replaced the lift pump with my spare, have new return kit in it 6 months ago, with 2 week old orings. she started to surge a couple of months ago so i just started to park just a little down hill and that would take care of the hard start. sometimes it would start fine then lope and then die.. especially parked up hill. I started it a couple of weeks ago to go get a christmas tree from the woods and after about 30 seconds it died for good.. i pulled the line off the return on the filter to find it kinda foamy, like air, when i cranked it. changed my lift pump , now it will sqirt over the fender but after i stop cranking it it will foam again... i used to be able to push in the shrader valve on the filter and be able to get fuel upon cranking, not no more. im sure i have good pressurre at the filter but who knows.. has anybody ever had a hole in a line in ffront of the lift pump, where abouts should be the first place to look... Im so sick of the rank of diesil on my skin that i went out and bought a 01 cummins to replace her for work but would love to get the old girl going for the bush.. Shes got 500000 miles on her origginal motor so shes old , but still kills any of my buddies same truck, i also have a spare ,complete 6.9 in the shop for when needed, so i would really like to figure this out.. Ive put 200000 on her in the last 6 years and would love to see if she out lasts the new dodge, just curious.. very savvy and familiar with these trucks so no need to talk like im new ,,
thanx tons guys

if it still has the factory fuel water seperator on the firewall, remove it and install a aftermarket one. they are prone to leaking air in. this would be before the lift pump, located on firewall next to your brake booster.
