Default New ip or ip timing?

So a couple weeks ago the truck (1994 f350 idit, 250000 mi) started having problems starting after it got warm and heat soaked. Ive had a buddy of mine who works a kenworth diagnose it as the ip and several local shops tell me the same. Regardless I ordered a new db2 but was just curious if this could be caused by incorrect timing? There does seem to be some greyish smoke a idle. Any help would b great, thanks in advance

first off, how many miles are on the pump?
secondly, if you belive the pump is truly shot, a quick test is when it is hot and heatsoaked, pour some cool(not cold) water on the injection pump. now see if it starts.

I'll have to try the cold water trick, ive heard of it but didnt want to ruin anything due to it being my daily driver. As far as miles on the pump I have no clue I bought the truck about 6 months ago. Besides my ip what else are my possibilties. Both batteries were replaced, along with my lift pump, and rountine maintance. also just out of curiousity are moose pumps any good? Apparently the rebuilt pump I picked up is a moose and has an internal gov. Spring changed. Only got it because there was no core charge, any good or bad thoughts on a moose.

moose pumps are the best rebuilt pumps out there. what was the spring changed to? if it is a chevy gov spring it will rev to 4500 rpm. just warning you.

Well thats some good news, I picked it up for 450, apparently it can go to 4500. I havent ever taken mine past about 3300, I dont foresee it being a problem. As far as replacing the ip what all is needed ie gaskets, loctite, returnlines ex.?

just a return line kit. and a good set of directions. and normal moose pumps go for 500-700, depending on the condition of the core you send in. a super moose can go for 1500+

ok if you have a grey smoke your pump is most likely too advanced or running too lean.... i would try to retard the timing on the pump... if it helps then get it to a happy spot and then start turning the internal fuel allen head up one flat at a time till she runs great....also add 1 qt AFT to your tank on a full tank or at next fill up..... but start with pump timing......... reason i think its fuel timing..... retarded would make black smoke ... blue means way too rich and grey means too lean.... probabbly stumbles and dosent have much power either..... start with timing...
