Default timing....

ok so today i finished up rebuilding the top end of my 7.3 idi if you remember i had the post "overheating my 7.3" anyways im having a timing issue... i think. when i stripped the motor down i pulled the injector pump off in one piece. and when i went to time it. i couldnt find it in the book on how i should.. i have done it once before but cant for the life of me remember how.... i lined up the timing mark on the crank with the top hole and set the timing pin at 6 o clock...... pull started it since i had to prime the fuel system.. hardly runs tons of white smoke runs for a few sec then looses power and stalls.. i know white smoke is fuel issues. so my guess was i timed it wrong. any suggestions?
