85 glow plug problem in ford 6.9
Hello Big Red. I have a 85 f250 4x4. It has been my daily driver for my job snow clearing for 3 years. Last summer I had new glow plugs relay new faster starter and two new batteries installed. The truck started with half a crank every time. I didnt have to get in the vehicle just reach in turn the key wait for the light to go out and it would flash right up. I changed out the oil for synthetic before winter and the truck always started easily no mater the temp. Some time in march during our last cold snap the glow plugs failed. The guys at the shop replaced the glow plugs and it all seemed good for a couple of starts but then no glow plugs. New controler and plugs still didnt fix the problem. It was snowing every day and I had to be to my loader for 330 am for work so they hooked the glow plugs to a push button and every thing was good. I made it through the rest of the winter but slowly the glow plugs burnt out and last week I had to go back to plugging the truck in. It is still going below freezing at night here. I think I was holding the glow plugs on to long. I will get new ones installed soon but I was hoping to get every thing back to the way it was if possible. The mechanic thinks it is in the wireing harness and that the system is coming on while driveing. I appretiate any and all advice. All the best from sunny B. C.

im going to agree with your mechanic about there might be a short in the harness, just so you kno the wait to start light is jus a reference, the glow plugs will still heat up for about another 2 to 3 minuits, but i have noticed on my old 94 idi if i left the key turned for to long heating the glo plugs it wouldnt start, i could be wrong and if i am someone will correct me but plugging in the truck doesnt heat up the glo plugs, just the block and intake. im going to bet on your problem being in the wiring
