High idle problem
Hello. I am new here. I have a 93 E350 Ford with a 7.3 non turbo that I think was originally a Budget rental van. I have owned it for over 2 years with no problems, but last week I noticed it idling faster than usual, as well as 2 mornings now with very hard starting. The van has a little over 350k on it, and I have always thought it is low on power. Any help on the idle/ starting problem, and when we fix that, what can I do to make this van pull harder? Any info is appreciated.- Cory
Well, It could be alot of reasons, but one the glow plugs could be going bad or have gone bad for the hard starting. also it could be the reasons that is high idle. Also the high idle could be out of adjustment (the screw has been turned in) But its a bit sketchy info I am running of of. Dose it smoke and if so is it black, blue or white smoke?
and to make it pull 'harder' the automatic transmission isnt the best the haul with, but i am a manual gear jammer then the slip-o-matics.

Thanks for the response. I will tell you where I am at now. The idle increase is new, so not the idle screw. I adjusted that completely out and no change. The cold idle was so high that I disconnected the fast idle solenoid wire. I just checked it with a tach and am running at 850 rpm all the time. I installed a new fuel supply pump, checked and blew out the feed and return lines from the supply pump and the injector pump. No restrictions. There is no restrictions in the air supply. I checked the return feed from the injection pump to see if there was any black debris from the governor washer? None. Clean diesel. As well as the higher idle, there is a slight hesitation when just starting to accelerate. I have done some reading on these engines and wonder if the injection timing can change by parts being worn. As I mentioned, the truck has a little over 350K on it, and I wonder if something is well over due to be changed. It makes very little black smoke when working hard, even after turning up the injection pump some time ago. Thank you again for any help you can offer.- Cory

Alright, it sounds like the it could be the timing with that much of mileage, It sounds it possibly be a injectors that could be filled with junk. Try to use a injector cleaner in your fuel and try that. Next thing to try is to check the govern coming from the transmission. I have had it get stuck in a minor position and not notice. Or the vacuum powered advance if it has cruse control. That too could be a cause to the issue, but I am not sure what to say about the heavy black smoke mines done it when I have hauled heave loads.
I have found what I think is the problem. The two white plastic non- tamper caps on the back of the injection pump have screws with jam nuts under them. They are both loose, and the lower one is leaking fuel. What are these adjusters for, and what is the correct setting for them? Thank you for any assistance.- Cory
I did some reading on a few of these forums and, after finding out what that screw is for, I adjusted it out 2 turns, cranked up the inj pump a quarter turn, and WOW! Now the throttle pedal feels stiffer and the engine has almost instant response. I took it up a steep hill and get a good amount of black smoke, and noticeably more power. The idle is still a bit high, (826 rpm) but I can live with that and, since tightening the nut and stopping the fuel leak, the engine starts properly in the morning! IDI stands for I Did It!
are those screws standard and did you have to remove the IP to get to it ?
I have a 94 turboed f 250 automatic and it seems to be having low RPM issues and intermittent stalling. 375000 miles and i have not replaced the injectors.
