Default High idle in cold weather

hello everyone,

I live in Montana and winter is here already having mornings -15 to -20 and i have noticed that my truck will automatically go to a igher idle around 1000 rpm after a couple minutes truck is an 05 2500.I have read about some tuners that offer a manual high idle using the cruise control buttons is that only with a tuner or is that standard on these trucks ??

they'll do it themselves through the stock programming of the ecm, i know my 03 is not able to be programmed for adjust ability with the cruise buttons, but your 05 might be. Take it too the stealership and see if they can program it

Did you not want it to idle high? My 06 does when it's cold here (30 degrees)

I dont mind the high idle but when it goes up it seem to have a kind of lope to it that it doesnt have if you were to manually raise the idle ...not sure why

My 04 does the same bumps to around 1000 1200 and yes it sounds like it's loaping but when you drop it in gear it go's back to normal. I think it's doing a couple things when it does that. 1 it's trying to build temp in the engine to get everything warm and 2 the heaters are cycling so it bumps the idle up to help with the recharge. Just my guess but from what other guys have told me when the ol girl is cold she likes to purr a little.

The loaping sound I would guess is because it's an inline 6 cylinder so it's just the way it's firing makes it sound that way. My 83 cj with the inline 6 gasser sounds the same. At a little higher rpm.

The lope sound is your truck likely going into 3 cylinder warm up mode. I would have to look into it if your truck actually dose it. Mine dose it but it's a few years newer . Your dealer should be able to hook you up high idle . Your cruse control has to be on then you idle it up and down with your resume and accelerate functions. Or do what we all did way up north use a high idle stick .

im not sure if my 05 came with the cruise function from factory.. being i had the truck for less than an hour and slapped a smarty jr on it.

But. with the smarty jr i have the high idle through cruise function. and i did note that the truck still does start on a 3 cyl cold start on extremely cold mornings.
