Default 5-speed to a 6-speed

Does anyone know, will the ZF 650 from behind a psd fit in an '88 3/4 ton. If it will, what do I have to do to the cross member, if anything. And will the transfer cases interchange for the 4x4, I don't know which either one uses.

From what I've read, it will bolt up no problem,(7.3 PSD 6 speed, that is) using the factory flywheel/clutch set-up. They're both hydraulic with external slave cylinders. I'd use the 6 speed t/o bearing and clutch fork. As for the t-case, they're all 6 bolt pattern, but I can't comment on the output shaft length/spline count. If you're getting the transmission, why not just grab the BW4407 behind the 6 speed? They're a lot more stout than our BW1356.

Also, on a 6 speed, you'll need to add an external transmission cooler, as the 6 speed has an internal pump to cool the tranny fluid. Cool swap; post pics.

I'm actually hoping to convert this truck from the roasted C-6 auto to a manual shift. I'd really like to use the 6-speed, but I'd like to reuse as many parts as possible, like the transfer case. From what I've read, the t/c will bolt onto the ZF-5, but you can only learn so much from reading about it. I'm not looking to build a rock crawler or anything like that, just an old beater for around the farm that i'm not scared to drive to town.

That sounds like a cool swap i would be very interested in info and pics. of that. Now tat u got me thinking about this, im going to start looking into it!!! But wat about the clutch?? is it the same diameter? Then u would have to put in a solid mass flywheel. But im really liking this idea!!

from what I've been able to find out so far, you can use the same clutch and flywheel. All of the slave components will interchange as well as the transfer case. The biggest thing is modifying the crossmember, driveshafts and coming up with a tranny. I haven't actually done this yet, and unless I can come up with a good tranny cheap, I probably won't be doing it.
BTW - I've got family in Winnipeg

If you go through with it, I'd like to know exactly what's involved. If I can get my hands on a ZF-6 I'm doin' it too.
My mother's side of the family lives all over up there, it's too cold for me, if the snow don't melt the day after it falls, I need to get a little further south.

If you are planning on using the 5spd flywheel I would look into the LUK single mass flywheel conversion for the 7.3 motor the dual mass flywheels are junk.

yes they are!! I also looked into the southbend clutch. nice kit but really expensive. i also looked at the centerforce, as usual really expensive. But they would probably last a lifetime behind a 7.3 IDI cause they dont have huge amounts of power.

from what I have heard I believe either outlaw or dps has a clutch guy that can build up some good clutches for the idis
