Default Too much smoke

We got my son's 88 7.3 IDI running after it had sat for two years. Had just been rebuilt but ran out of time and money...It will only start with an ether assist and then run ok, fair anyways. Dumped copious black smoke. After several attempts at fuel screw, minimal change, and timing adjust, minimal too. Now it still smokes too heavy, still won't start on its own, and the throttle is vveeeeerrrrry laggy. Barely responds after half throttle, comes up in rpm slow, no snappy vroom!
Any thoughts are appreciated

Ahh, interesting.... The thought had not occurred to me. The injectors and glowplugs are all new, but it has sat for a while. Thanks, I'll pull them and see what I can find

What about the injection pump? Your symptoms sound similar to those of a friend who had a bad IP.
