Default Can I put a 2000 7.3L powerstroke turbo on my 1993 7.3L idi?

I was wondering if it was possible to fabricate a way to install a 2000 7.3 powerstroke turbo onto my 1993 7.3 idi. If so how would I go about doing it? Is it even worth my time? My idi has the stock Garrett turbo but I wanted something bigger. Please help.

It is possible, would require quite a lot of fabricating for it to work correctly. If you have the budget and an engine secure enough for it to take the boost pressures, then by all means. If not, then I wouldn't do it.

Okay thanks. Would I be able to buy a powerstroke turbo downpipe and rip my old one out? Or is there mounting issues that I would need to take care of.

You can do it but you will need to do alot of fab work including replacing the whole exhaust. I have helped a friend with this, we ended up finding a wrecked 99 powerstroke for $1000 and just swapped everything off of that. Might be cheaper and easier to find a donor truck or engine. Definitly worth your time espescially if you install the intercooler.

What about mounting the turbo on the pedestal? Will that be different as well?

Getting out of my area of knowledge for that one, I can look deeper into it as far as what the fab work would consist of, you would barely be using the turbos potential though

The IDI can't handle full boost pressures from a 2000psd turbo. I think head bolts, connecting rod pin, all kinds of parts weren't made for those pressures. Hell, even psd compensate a bit with lower compression that IDI's.

The entire rotating assembly was changed, just swapping the turbo will cause the head to be blown off the block, even with studs, you will have to severely lower the compression from 22.5:1 to roughly 15:1 for that kind of boost.

Yeah I'm starting to rethink that idea. I'll probably just look for a powerstroke. Thanks again.

It's by all means do able, but it's just not a weekend project. The ones that have done the swap swear by it and love it. Plus there's a cool factor which has a big role
