Default FORD 7.3 IDI, fuel additives

OK, I got a notification to post "or else"... I like reading all the posts to gather info and be informed, but since I am posting, may as well make it worth my time. I recently acquired a nice 1990 Ford F250 4x4 Diesel... it is a 7.3 idi automatic. I love the thing. It does have 279K miles, but as a diesel, that seems to be nothing. It is not a daily driver (my 1987 Harley Davidson FLHS Electra Glide Sport is my daily driver), so I think I will recoup mileage/time ratio.

Nothing on the truck looks modified... stone stock, just the way I like it. I guess I have one question re additives... since i have no real history of this diesel usage, I decided to run additives to maybe clean it out a little. I have run a 20 gal tank of Diesel Kleen (silver bottle), and almost another tank with SeaFoam. My aux tank has Diesel Kleen in it, too. I have Lucas injector cleaner I have not used (I use it on my bike every so often) in the diesel. I know it does not hurt, but does it help? First tank with proper amount of Diesel Kleen, did not seem to make any difference... next tank with Sea Foam seemed to run better... switched to aux tank with Diesel Kleen and it felt like there was more power, and ran really well (I think)... I am imagining that the additives are doing a deep clean of this 279K mile engine... imagining...

I also do not consider an additive question a "technical question"... but I could be wrong, hahaha... whatever...

Moved it down here... Welcome to the site!

I dont put much faith in fuel aditives, good clean filtered diesel is what I use.

I run Howes diesel treatment.

The biggest thing you need to do is make sure you keep good fuel lubrication. Some additives do have cetene boosters, which will give you more power. Lubrication and anti gel is what I care about since I'm running my diesel in temperatures down past -40 degrees.

Have you changed your fuel filter since you bought the truck? That alone can make a big difference.

I strongly disagree with the not running fuel additives, especially with how sh..y the fuel has become. Personally I like the Stanadyne diesel additive. It will up the cetane and also add lubricity. I trust the Stanadyne brand as they are also the manufacture of the injector pump and nozzles that came on the engine from the factory. I spoke with the shop foreman of one of the large construction companies around here and he told me they buy cases of it and add some on every p.m. they do. Also I spoke with a ford diesel mechanic that was working with ford while those trucks were still new and he also suggested the Stanadyne additive but he suggested that when I change the fuel filter to fill the filter with the additive and it will clean the pump and nozzles. Hope this helps.
