6.9 not starting
hello,i have a f250 6.9 idi that is being a b?$#@ to start ,it cranks over, but doesnt fire,i give it a shot of starting fluid a it fires right up,now heres the weird part,i replace the gp's and it fires up instanty for a cpl weeks or so then out of the blue it doesnt fire,so change the gp's again, fires up good for a month this time, and once again blistered gp's wont start without a shot of starting fluid, now the problem is it has a gp warm up button but i dont use it being hot outside, how are the gp's burning out if i dont use them?second of all why wont it fire regardless its 80+degrees outside.batteries are good,no leeks at the injectors any help would be awsome .ty
Have you tested the glow plug relay? I know ford had a lot of issues with them. I had the some what of the same problem with my 94 7.3 IDI. It wouldn't start unless it was plugged in even if it was 110 degrees outside, replaced the glow plugs, fixed the wiring to the glow plugs, had to replace the battery cables. Would then start but only if I cycled the glow plugs three or four times. Replaced the glow plug relay now all is good.
I have to ask what brand glow plugs your using, as the ONLY folks plugs that should be used in these trucks is Beru gps from Germany AKA Motorcraft/International branded plugs. Also have you had your timing checked or messed with lately?
The glow plugs on a button is each to their own (depending on the person) I like leaving my truck as original as possible. I have replaced my glow plugs and relay and also had to replace the battery cables and now works just like new.
i un hooked the push botton and rehooked the controller, finally found beru gp's, so going to pick those up this wknd, wish there was a way to check the controller, before i drive two hours to buy my gp's,if i need a controller i'll buy one of those to.thanks for all the help guys
Sure there's a way to check the controller! Take a gp out turn the key to the on position, hold the gp in your hand, and see how many times it burns you!!
, no, please don't do that. I saw that in another forum and died laughing! I believe in my searches I came across a tech artical on how to check glow plugs and their control system with a volt meter, though i can't seem to find it again. When i do find it, ill post the link. hopefully before you take the trip
