04 Dodge Cummins Oil Smell
Every now and then u can smell oil and it smells like its buring it but it aint i was wonder wut the fleet guard deal is on the vavle cover and if that would make it smell like oil if it was kinda like a pcv vavle or something its got 66500 miles on it also anybody no why the driver side rear door lock wouldn't work with all the others?? anybody ever had the driver side head light bulb go out and then come back on???

on the bulb its a short on the door locks its probably natural and the oil smell is probably oil being burned. if you look at your oil when you change it after 3000 miles it will be black with soot that is burned diesel which means you are getting the mix of oil with your diesel, that is why it is important to change your oil on a diesel every 3000 or sooner

I had the same problem with my 12 valve. Changed the oil to rotella after I bought it and a week or so later I started to notice a nasty oilly smell every now and then. I eventually gave up looking for it because the mechanic looked at the truck and couldn't figure it out. Switched to a different oil after 3000 miles since rotella wasnt available, and the smell was gone. I didn't think anything of it until I switched back at the next change. Poured Rotella back in and the smell was back. I did some searching on a different forum and they had bunch of people with the same problem. I don't know if it is a problem with the new CJ-4 stuff or what but it was the source of my problem.

I dont think there is anything wrong with Rotella lubrication wise and I don't know of anyone with problems other than that smell. A guy I used to work with bought a 55 gallon drum of it before they switched over to the new CJ-4 stuff. He runs it in his 7.3 powerstroke and doesn't have any strange smells. Then again this could just be a wierd 5.9 cummins thing.
As far as Royal Purple goes I really don't know much about it. I run 5w-30 amsoil w/bypass in my 96 chevy 5.7 and it runs really well. Dad drove my truck now he is running it too, and mom want it in her van. If we keep talking about oil someone who sells amsoil will chime in sooner or later.
