Default TC brokey

So here are the pics as promised

It all started with this:

The internal splines on the Input gear have become somewhat crooked. It is kind of hard to see however. The external splines on the sliding thingy in the middle are partially sheared for sure. Which caused the two to try and force each other apart and it would jump a tooth when I would crest a hill and have a momentary lack of force on the two. Light pressure on the TC would prevent this. However that light pressure caused this to happen:

And sort of worked until this happened:

which left me without high range. However I could still engage the front planetary set and since the part that locks it in and out of 4wd was unaffected I still had 4lo which allowed me to limp it into the nearest town and get a room for the night.

Also the chain is missing a single link but that really had nothing to do with the above.

The first time I talked to the guy who was working on it he made it seems ALOT worse than it actually was. But I'll end up replacing the input gear,Sliding thingy in the middle, shift fork, shift collar, and all the bearings. Even though the carrier is probably alright I'll replace it anyways because I can't replace the bearings on the planet gears and more than likely they got small particles of metal ran through them.

Anyways. On with the show!

My New NV 271 I picked up from United Auto Recyclers in Omaha, NE on my way home. It is HUGE compared to my 241

Install was simple although it kinda sucked since I did it by myself. The TC is heavy and its a pita to line up the splines on the shaft.

Shown Installed. It is damn close to the body seam in my QCLB NV5600 but it fits up there about as close to perfect as I can hope.

So far the only problems I have run into are:

It is just barely touching the frame rail. So I'll have to do a little clearancing.

It almost lines up but not quite. I think If I had an Auto it would be darn close. All that needed to be changed is to switch out the 4WD switch on the 271 for the smaller one on the 241. other than that it bolts right up. Front driveshaft bolts right up. However, I don't know if my rear driveshaft needs to be shortened or not because it didn't come with a slip yoke

But I'm one step closer.

ok Updates.

Got the 271 Slip yoke (thanks Skynrd!!) Turns out my driveshaft is 3" too long. And Of course the nearest shop that works on driveshafts is a frickin hour away. Also the wind is blowing 30 mph and it is snowing and I'm stuck at work because my Damn bronco broke something in the steering column and I can't get the damn key to turn to the "On" position.

I love my life.

OK an Update.

SHE LIVES MWHAHAHAHA!

Had to make a special trip to North Platte(60 miles away) and got my driveshaft shortened 3". I should have gotten it shortened another Inch because the little rubber dust shield is rubbing on the slip yoke but oh well. And My driveshaft wasn't balanced because I didn't take the whole shaft in. I just took in the front shaft and apparently it needs to be balanced as an assembly however I have just a slight vibration. I might seperate the two shafts and try to reclock the two shafts and see if I can get it to go away. I'll get some pics of the final assembly when I get it all finished up.

So in overview:
Things I needed to change/modify
Vacumn switch needs to be switched. However my 4wd lights don't come on so I still need to figure out whats up with that.
Driverside framerail needs to be clearanced.(still need to do. It just touches but not bad)
Rear driveshaft shortened 3-4 inches
Front driveshaft might need to be lengthened for a truck with a leveling kit (maybe) I'll pull the boot off and see how much slip yoke I have left at full droop.
Rear crossmember(the part the skidplate bolts to) might have to be modified. However it is hard to tell because I smacked mine pretty hard on a sand drift and bent it.

I popped off the little green end off the shifter and it pushed right in the hole on the shifter for the T-Case. However it is hard to get it in 40lo as the lever almost runs out of travel before it engages. I might see about putting the lever off the 241 on it and try it that way.

For some reason I have a rattle under my truck that sounds like a rock in a pop can but other than that its a perfect dream. Hopefully I shouldn't have any TC troubles any time soon.
