Default Junkyard 12 Valve Cummins

I am very interested in building up a 12 Valve Cummins into a pulling motor. My question is this, would the junkyard be a good source for getting an engine block. I am just after the bare block really, and I want to get one as cheap as possible. I plan to strip the motor completely down and then take the block to a machine shop and have it worked over. Would this be a good way to go about getting the block? I can't seem to find just a bare block anywhere else, and if I do it already has a bunch of stuff done to it and they want a fortune for it. With how radical I am gonna go with the engine build, the bar block is all I need, cause I am gonna need different parts than stock from there on out anyway. Please let me know what you guys think on this as I would like to find a block as soon as possible so I can start building up an engine. In case you are wondering what I plan to put the engine into, I am gonna drop it in my 2006 HD chevy. I am in the process of turning it into the most radical street legal pulling truck that I can. I want it to be road legal so that I can drive it to the pulls I plan to go to, plus I would like to have some fun with it off the track. Anyway, please let me know if you guys think this would be a good source for the block, and if so what year/years truck should I go after to get the block from?

The block itself isnt as important as the injector pump. I would be shooting for a 96-98 block with a P-7100 injector pump (the 215 hp version that came in the manual shift trucks).

But, you sound like your doing major work, so the block choice probably isnt that critical.

That said, I will caution you against a #53 block (they were available from 98.5-2002), as they have cracking issues due to thin castings.

Well I am in PA, so not close. I wonder how much shipping would cost. I should be getting a few pay checks in the next few days. I will have to see if I can work something out.

Are you in a hurry to sell it, cause if not I am very interested, it is just gonna be a matter of time getting the details worked out. I guess what I am asking is, would you mind holding it for me for an undetermined amount of time, . Do you have any idea what company would be best to check for good shipping prices? Let me know man, like I said I am very interested.

I may even be able to convince one of my buddies to take a road trip with me to come and pick it up. Give me some time to run my different options through my head.

Get back to me when ya get this and let me know if you need to unload it soon or if I have some time to get things in order. Talk to ya soon, later.

P.S. please include your zip code in your reply so I can see how long it would take me to drive there.
