Mine did the same thing this past weekend and stranded me out of town with all dealerships closed. What causes this to happen. My truck has 66,000 miles on it.

PS. First post....newbie here!

I changed the tensioner, idler pulley bearing, and belt at 82,000 to prevent such a deal.

What is this a 3rd gen problem? Never heard of this happening.

Although I did have a fan clutch fly apart sent the fan on a ride of distruction in the engine bay. Took out the radiator, fan shrud, the fan its self, both radiator hoses, and nicked the intercooler. A freaking mess I tell you, no nosie before hand.

That's a good call.
It wouldn't have helped me and Wiki at 82K but I can tell you it is extremely disappointing when your CTD is sitting on the side of the road for something like this.

The $100 deductible is probably more than paying out-of-pocket for the fix...

Makes me a little concerned...I got 192k on all the original stuff!

Think you hit a wrong button here bud.

Usually when somethin like this happens it's either just because of the cheap factory part or the idler puller get's pulled out a whack far enough that it twists the belt just enough to pull on those bearings over the long run. If that belt is the slightest bit off center on any pulley it makes short work of the bearings. You can check the edges of your belt to see if all of the pulley's are lined up right, one side or the other will be marked up more if somethin is out.

That idler pulley is the most common source of problems here.

My idler just started making noise yesterday. I can feel some angular play in the top idler pulley and if I load the pulley (a/c on, power steering to lock, etc.) the noise goes away. I'm sure the additional belt load damps the chatter.

Where do I get a new idler?
Can the bearing just be replaced?

Genos Garage or local parts house for the tensioner pulley, and Cummins for the fixed steel idler.
