its really not that complicated to do if you have tools and any mechanical knowledge, even if you have to pull the head its not that bad. Just keep an eye on the retainer those are the types of things that will ruin your day if ya lose one

has anyone ever herd of the string trick? i called cummins northwest today and he said to insert a string threw the injector hole when baring the engine over to put pressure on the valve when the piston is up. what is everyones thoughts on this

i've done this on gas motors. 90% of the time the string method isn't needed BUT you must have the piston at TDC for that cyl or it will ruin your day. also the string helps to prevent piston to valve contact that might bend or nick something and cause issues.

so if i have the piston at full TDC and carefully set the valve on the piston i wont loose it in the cylender, how much of the valve will still be grabable from the top?

if the piston is at TDC for that set of valves then 90-99% of it should be grabable..... i haven't looked at the pistons up close for one of our cummins but on a gasser 99% of the time they have flat tops (i know we have a nice dish in ours) and they have valve reliefs cut into them. i'm not sure where a valve would sit on one of ours ..... dono if it would go in the dish or not....

PS i found that other badge the other day.....

oh did ya thanks though i ended up getting the other from ebay, i would really hate to loose a valve in the cylender, im trying not to have to take the head off, cant use air because my compressor dont get past 100psi and i might not be a bad idea to try and use rope

the only downside is having to pull the injectors.... make sure to get small rope cause the tip of that injector is perty small.....

thats another thing i didnt want to do was pull the injector because those damn return lines are a pain in the *** to put back on, im just kinda leary about dropping a valve into the cylender even at total TDC, but then again ive never done it before and dont know what the hell im doing anyway
