Default Axle Shaft

ok guys i pulled the driver side axle shaft out of my dodge and it snapped reight at the splines, my thought to take the broken piece out is to pull the diff carrier but i dont want to go to all that work again, i was thinking it could be pushed into the carrier and the just grab it whats everyone elses thoughts

Don't push it into the carrier, you probably still won't be able to get it out. Your only option besides pulling the diff is a strong magnet on the end of a rod... Its a pita to get it out, but if you push it in your likely to push small chips in with it, chips you won't find out about until its too late .

I can pull a diff, inspect it, and throw it back in on a Dana 80 in less than 30 minutes, of course I worked for Dana for a long time as a test engineer/technician, but with a carrier spreader, couple pry bars, and some good old elbow grease its not a hard job. You don't have to reset any GTP, or Backlash. Just make sure you label the bearing caps, and races, they have to go back to their original side.

couldnt you pull the other axle and use a long broom handle and push it to the diff tube and grab it with a magnet then and pull it out? i do this on the big trucks and have succes.

You could... Again, the problem is that you usually have flakes of steel that break off when the shaft breaks. Its not all the time, but I'd put it at about 40% of the time, and if one of those chips should get into your R&P, its gonna bust or at least mangle a tooth. If it gets into a carrier bearing, pinion bearing, or spider gear, its gonna wipe out the whole diff. I've seen them also just get trapped in the bottom of the carrier, and never become a problem. How's your luck?

ok i pulled the diffcover off and the driverside seal is bad the wire spring in the center of the seal is all mangled up but i dont really want to replace it. i was able to get the shaft out no problem little ducttape on a stick and pulled it right out.

Lol. So your just gonna leave the seal in there bad? I'm surprised duct tape worked, usually things are too oily and greasy for any tape to work. I'll have to add that trick to my playbook.

Never dealt with the stuff. If something was broken at Dana, we had to fix it... Of course, we had all the right tools, and had done pretty much everything a thousand times, so it went real quick.

Oh, you can get it without the spreader, it just makes it much more difficult. You can probably rent one from autozone or something. Its just a good idea so you don't screw up a carrier bearing or race.
