Turbo Bark!?
Hey everyone! I have a 98.5 12 valve cummins that needed some more life to it so I added a #10 fuel plate ontop of exhaust, intake etc. end result was 356hp and 975fpt - haven't put pyro gauges in it yet but thats happening soon. I took it back to the boys to check out the wierd noise it was making when driving it to its potential - not foot to the floor but leaning into it decent- fourth gear to 5 lots of the chatter noise and as soon as u let the throttle go from 5 while accelerating fairly well. Turbobark was the explanation I was told.
Can this be harmful to the motor and how would I address this problem? Any info would be much appreciated! Thanx

Turbo bark is common but it will kill a turbo, it happens when pressure on the manifold side of the turbo is greater than the boost pressure,(other wise know as drive pressure vs. boost pressure) usually on hard acceleration and then a quick let off of the go pedal(thus the turbo bark will happen). Usually its hard to do on a stock turbo but it can be done with a lot of fuel and like i said a quick let off after hard acceleration, easiest way is to try not to do it, after to long it can snap the shaft in the turbo. Adjusting the waste gate can help to. DD
Further to turbo bark, I have just recently put on a HTT62/12 and when I am accelerating to merge into traffic and the rpms drop during the shift to 3rd my turbo is barking. How do I stop that? I am in an auto. Sometimes I can't give it more peddle to make sure that it is keeping pressure.
I installed a Fluidampr on my 12V Dodge diesel and noticed a marked reduction in turbo bark. The damper increases the rotation inertia of the engine which reduces engine changes due to loading. It makes the engine run smoother. The fluidic damper with its greater inertia may save your turbo on a engine which is developing higher power. That turbo bark is an indication of an abupt change in engine exhaust gas flow. That change can damage the turbo charger in extreme cases where there is a lot of energy involved.
