Default Dodge Reliability

Hey Guys, this in no way meant to bash the cummins, but how reliable are Dodge trucks? I've seen sites like these The Dodge Ram Problems Page and it made me wonder, so I figured I would get opinions from the real experts ( DB Members of course)

I dont think i have ever heard those words in the same sentince ( Dodge reliable and not) . All trucks have there issues. Are we talking Cummins or the wrapper?

I honestly believe that there is no engine more reliable than a 12 valve with a p7100. In stock form and up to 500hp above that they all start having a lot of issues.

Sorry if it's vague, just didn't want anybody to think I was bashing the Cummins, We're talking the wrapper.

Every make and model is not without its problems. That said, I've been around the Dodge for a number of years now and haven't heard of half of that stuff that that guy has tabulated.

Most of it appears to be transmission related. This of course is an issue with the Dodge AUTOMATIC or slush box transmissions of the second generation and earl third generation trucks. From what I can tell the new 6 spd auto seems to be up to the task. I for one won't / don't drive an auto for a variety of reasons and it is nothing more than a personal choice.

I listed a few things here on a post over the years and you'll have to search for it but basically, out side the fuel delivery system the trucks are pretty bullet proof. Not to say that anyone with good relations with their DMAX or PSD wouldn't say the same. For me, I was a ford guy before I bought my Dodge new in 2002 and it is the best truck I have ever owned.

That said, DC has it's problems most of which circle around the simple fact they have yet to offer a real crew cab and a long box combo in more than a number of years. Apparently, in 2009 / 2010 this is going to change but I will wait until I see it.

Now as was mentioned above, are we talking about the Cummins motor or the truck body? My truck gets used. It needs some body work, a new paint job in a few years most likely and is starting to show wear in the steering and front end again (another well documented problem with them).

All of that said, I'm a dodge / cummins guy now.

In that case what year are we talking?

94-97 had bad primer in the paint.
The driver seats tend to rip
They get the death wobble and sloppy steering
On the 2nd gens the dashes crack and on some the 3rd brake light leaks and soaks the floor

That’s just off the top of my head

Ill say again all trucks have there weaknesses

Good post Wyatt, Xzaq: everything except the motor, any year. These guys make strong accusations against chrysler (on that website and others like it, I.E wheels falling off and causing wrecks, loose steering, Bad trannies) and wanted to know what experiences the real experts had (Db Members)

I posted on this site something along the lines of:

lift pumps, injection pumps, steering pumps, death wobble, abs sensors, auto trans, KDP (older stuff) and rust, thin metal wall thickness that sort of thing.

Thanks wyatt, I found it, oh and I do agree that every truck has there strong/ weak points and that it basically comes down to the luck of the draw.

its not so much just luck of the draw if you are looking into them just have to know what to look for and if you own one just maintain it and she will hold up nicely. most people tend to complain about things going wrong and not understanding why. all trucks have those parts that over time wear and tear take over and they go to crap. like my 95 the seats are tearing and the steering is sloppy I know why though I dont think any one has ever changed or properly maintained the ball joints. but like what was said before all great trucks have some sort of a down fall some people just dont realize it and unfortunatly bad word spreads faster than good word. all and all though I dont think there is a bad truck on the market these days.
