Pinion depth is set with shims and gives you the correct gear mesh.
Backlash and carrier bearing preload is set with shims on the carrier bearings. I've never done a Dana, but appropriately thick shims on one or the other side(s) should end up giving you the correct gear setup, along with pinion depth as described above.
