Default Turn Signals and Wipers Gone Crazy!?!*

As many of you may know I am relatively new to the diesel world... I picked up my first 1998Dodge 12v a few months ago. I just recently joined and introduced myself to the group of enthusiasts here at DieselBombers.com and thought I could contribute a little to the group.

My truck was a bit of a fixer-upper... one of the many things that needed attention was the fact that the the left turn signal and the horn would trigger the windshield wipers to cycle a few times. I did some research and found that there were a few people who shared this problem. I did come across a thread where another person remedied the problem by cleaning up a ground under the driver side battery tray. I studied the wiring diagrams in the factory service manual and did find that all of these systems tied into a common ground referred in the manual as G100 (located under the driver side battery tray). I inspected the eyelet, cleaned the mating surfaces and put it all back together with no success.

Finally, after doing a little diagnosing and determining that this ground had to be faulty, I decided to completely take the eyelet apart. This is what I found:

Everything looks fine but after taking it apart it was apparent that many of the ground wires were corroded/oxidized or brittle to say the least. The corrosion continued under the insulation! My only conclusion was that the corrosion was so bad that it was effectively insulating these grounding circuits from the chassis requiring them to seek ground through the wiper circuit. I stripped and cleaned the corrosion and oxidation off of the wires and put it all back together with new crimps and all works well now!

I hope that anyone else with this same problem finds this thread and hopefully saves themselves a lot of time and aggravation.
