Default Tach output using stock gauge... I THINK IT WILL WORK!

i have searched this subject as much as i can find and have found no one that can make this work somehow with out an after market pick up for the tach. This is from the EFIlive program on my laptop for an LS1B type pcm (which is whats in newer style trucks i converted mine a few years ago).

The number of crankshaft medium resolution pulses (24x pulses) to hold the tacho output high (should match {G1205} "Tacho Pulses Low").

The number of output pulses P is calculated as P=24/(N*2) where N is the value of this calibration.

Sample values for this calibration:
For 12 pulses, use N= 1
For 6 pulses, use N= 2
For 4 pulses, use N= 3
For 3 pulses, use N= 4
For 2 pulses, use N= 6
For 1 pulse, use N=12

so if i can wire my crank sensor that is in my motor now with a pick up wheel that is the same fashion i should be able to adjust my PCM to read as a V6 engine and use my factory take and wiring. not sure if i would need to change the pulses per rotation or not. when i wire the tach read out wire to my crank shaft sensor as its meant to read for crank/cam shaft correlation, but its just a voltage signal picked up by a magnet like any after market sensor.

it will be a while before i get to try this but i think it will work....

what did the chevy use as a tone ring? the way i would try to do it would be to try to replicate a tone ring the same diameter with the same number of holes as the chevy, even better yet if you could use the same one, the attatch it to the cummins crank. i know thats alot more of a crude answer but algebra was not my area of expertise.

it has 4 pick ups on it if i remember correct from the last time i had the pan off that motor. and sits right behind the harmonic balancer inside the oil pan. if i had to make one or have one made it would be very simple to make the hard part would be mounting the sensor correctly inside the oil pan. i would have to make a hole for the wires to run through and seal it up good.

sorry to answer your original question its just a steel ring with the 4 high spots (pick ups)

why couldn't you mount it on the outside like the cummins does and if it a 4 pick up the dodge is a 2 just grind 2 extra slots

that is what all the guys doing a fummins are doing is grinding in 2 extra slots

is this located on the back of the harmonic balancer then? because one did not come with this engine (i think it got messed up in crash) and theirs nothing there but a mounting point on the front of the crank shaft out side of the pan

thanks for the picks it looks like in the picture the crank sensor is picking up a signal off the harmonic balancer it self is this correct?

yes that is correct the guys dong the 99=01 fummings have been grinding in 2 more slots so they have a 4 count on the pickup you can use the cam sensor off a 99 v10 ground one wire and use that I am trying to use the stock cummins one will keep you posted as how it will wire up

I think

blk -- grnd
red--- 12v
green --- sensor

will find out soon
