Default Isuzu pup diesel into a 91 S10. Questions.

Yeap I want to try and do it. I have an isuzu pup diesel motor. My S10 has a dependable but real tired 2.8 v6 which is an isuzu motor. Wondering if anybody can tell the bellhousing pattern on the diesel motor. I was hoping since the 2.8 is manufactured by isuzu that the diesel might bolt up.
So some more info or advice is welcomed.

The 2.8 in the S10 is a GM 60* V6...

The Pup and Chevette diesels are the same engine family, FWIW.

We swapped an Isuzu engine from a diesel Chevette into a 2WD 4cyl/5spd S10. Fabricated an oil pan, bolted up a 5spd trans from an S10, and did a little tweaking to the S10 frame mounts. The Chevette engine mounts slid right onto the S10 frame mounts and the S10 radiator lined up with the Isuzu waterpump.

An oil pan from a gas Isuzu will bolt onto the diesel and clear everything in the S10...wish we would have known that at the time.

Then, somebody wanted to buy the truck as a gasser, so we put it back to stock and sold it.

I'm not 100% sure about the details on the trans, but it bolted right onto the Isuzu. We might have used the Isuzu bellhousing...I don't remember.

Thanks, What 4 cylinder was in your S10? My motor was from an isuzu pup truck. So I'm hoping the oil pan might not be an issue. If I can manage to get the motor and trans bolted together. It will be a fun little toy, and get great fuel mileage. Maybe put a small turbo on it.

The s10 started life as a 1993 2.5 4cyl truck. A lot of S10s came with a B-W T5 and I think that is what we bolted to the Isuzu motor.

I guess I was told wrong; the motors aren't completely identical. Turns out the Pup motor is a C22 and the Chevette motor is a 4FB1 (aka C180). The 4FB1 is a very sturdy design, oil cooled pistons, beefy crank, etc, etc. I've talked to several people who are putting a lot of boost (20psi+) through the 4FB21 without issue, but the C22, has a reputation for lifting the head gasket and sh!tting rods, especially when in turbo'ed form.

We've been looking for a decent Geo Tracker to swap it into, but prices for those things are nuts....$1000 for one with fist size rust holes.

Funny you mentioned sh!tting rods, After further looking at this pup diesel. It has apparently lost a rod at one time before, because someone has welded the block back up. So this motor might not be a good candidate to put in my truck anyways. How hard are the diesel chevette motors to find??

Did a search, those little motors aren't cheap. Guess as much as I'd hate to do it. going to put my 350 in the truck.

Put the little p'up motor into an Amigo body. It'll drop right in and make a great little commuter rig - with 4x4 for bad weather...
