I've been told in NY you can go to DMV and have the vehicle reclassed from gas to diesel wich would make you ok as far as smog testing. Not sure about that in other states.

i havent really looked into it. just going off previous dealings with dol and general assumptions. most parts of WA you dont even need to do safety inspections.

if you could reclass a vehicle like that, it would make heart ache alot less. im assuming that only goes for vehicles that had options for diesel engines?

What is the main difference between the older 5.9 and the 94-97?

Older? As in 89-93? They're the VE pump, less power than the P-pump but can also be fun. The VEs are pretty easy to mess with, just a screw driver and wrench to give it more umph, also I think the swaps're "easier", not sure though. Depends on what you what, power-wise. VEs are good up to around 500-ish hp while P-pumps can get 800 reliably. Either/or they're both good engines, run forever and fun as hell to drive.

I was thinking it was the pumps. I want to get 500hp. I do alot of heavy towing. I am trying to assemble my ultimate tow rig, that i can have fun with at the pulls. I am having a hell of a time finding a 94-98 5.9 at a reasonable price. I will just have to wait it out. Every time I fire up my powerstroke I am dissapointed...

I would use either of the mechanical engines... P-pump or VE, even non-intercooled. Very satisfying with just a little screw turning.

Oh yeah, and start with a gas truck. So much cheaper.

I want a p pump. I will just have to be patient. Intercooled is definitely the way I'm going. I need it with all the heavy towing I do!

Wiring wise, ford was pretty good about making most the wiring the same between gas or diesel, but wiring will mainly depend on what cummins your putting in. 89-93 12v needs 1 12volt wire to run, 94-98.5 12v needs 3 wires to run. 24v and commonrails get quite a bit more complicated electrically but lots have been done.

Hey so I am seriously considering putting a 93 cummins into my 97 F350 and I was just wondering if you had any advice concerning running the fuel tanks with electronic senders with the mechanical ve pumped cummins. Also, what did you do to make the existing ford gauges work or did you replace them with analog gauges? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The senders work no matter the fuel, as do the gauges. If you use a gas truck, you can use the stock fuel pumps but will have to get a regulator to bring the pressure down to 15psi max. I pulled my pump and put a siphon tube in the tank and got a 13psi external pump. You can also just use the stock block mounted fuel pump(looks just like a carb. gas mechanical fuel pump)
