Default 12 valve vs. 6.5 swap

i am looking into purchasing an 84 gmc jimmy with a 6.2.if i do get it i just wanna know what kinda work would be involved in the swapping of either of these motors . I love the cummins and already have 12 valve , but would a 6.5 drop right in?and how much would the cost run me for a turbo charged 6.5?iwould rather just sell my cummins as a whole cuz i dont have a good shop to do alot of work?what do you guys think?

A early 6.5 will drop directly in the space of a 6.2. The later 6.5 will do the same but you will need to change the injection pump to a db2 which is not hard. If it was me and the 6.2 still runs good I would find a turbo and put it on the 6.2 and turn the pump up some.

yea i definitely will keep the 6.2 as long as it runs and is cost effective.I like that turbo idea you had.what would you recommend, used banks?and what kind of boost could i make w/o head studs?

If you can find a used banks kit that would be the easiest. If you cant find some 6.5 parts. You will need a turbo. 92,93 will be mechanical waste gate newer ones are vacuum and you will have to convert them to mechanical not hard to do. A passenger side exhaust manifold, cross over pipe, and a down pipe. Find a F code non egr intake and upper intake. Any of the 6.5 turbos you will need to turn up which is not hard to do and I would not run more than 15 psi. One reason is you would be risking blowing a head gasket and the 6.5 turbos will not supply the volume needed to maintain more than that. Any of the parts I mentioned are not hard to come by.

Yes you will still need to change them. But if it is a used banks kit I would make sure that it comes with the exhaust manifold, down pipe and the plenum for the top of the intake.

ok that sound alot better than engine swapping.(though someday a 6.5 , a cummins or a duramax would be awesome but the jimmy i am getting only has 70,000miles so its got lots of life left.what kind of power would you estimate a turbo charged 6.2 would put out?

Banks says that it will gain 60 hp and 115 lb-ft of torque at the rear wheels. Now I don't know how much faith I put in there numbers because they also claim theres got 11mpg and I have never owned a 6.2 that got that bad. I am going to say it would be somewhere around a 6.5 200hp and mid 400 lb-ft but I have heard th turbo 6.2 will out perform the 6.5 I don't know because I have not had time to put my Banks kit on my 6.2.

Putting a 6.5 in it would be ok but they are basically the same as the 6.2. A Cummins would be easier than a D-Max but if I was going to go through the work I would put a D-Max in it.

if your turboing a stock 6.2 i would not go over 10 psi of boost. they were not designed for a turbo like the 6.5 was so for relaiblity sake i wouldnt go over that. the old banks turbos were not as efficent either compared the 6.5 turbos. plus used 6.5 turbos are cheaper
