Yea, the stock air cleaner (fed version) wont fit, but the cali one is a big canister type that uses a huge filter. I will have to relocate the battery to make room for it, but I think it will breathe better. sounds like you are getting close to hearing it run!! I am about to the point of taking that long road trip with the jeep, just need to find the time!

Why not? It sits on the PS side on top of the manifolds, and doesn't really stick up above the top of the valve cover. In fact it sits at a little angle such that the edge farthest from the valve cover is about a half inch lower than the edge closest to the valve cover. Even if the hood hits it, it should be pretty easy to make the minor modifications neccessary to set it a little lower so that the hood will close.

Not as close as I'd like. Just let me know when you're ready to make the trip, and I'll make good on our bet...

It sits too far back and would hit the firewall/heater/a/c hoses, move it foreward and all the factory hoses, oil drains etc need reworked, plus the battery gets in the way. So if I have to re-engineer everything, I might as well make something I like.

O yea!

Got my new air cleaner installed and battery relocated. I noticed a little improvement over the cone filter, so I expect the mileage to improve as well. Also got some free time to do a little wheeling, had a blast!

Good job on install, looks like it was made for it. I have never seen the air cleaner from California. I still have a cone on my wrangler, i may try to find one.

That air cleaner was on all 300D, 300CD, and 300TD models sold in California for the last few years. Not sure if they put them in the 300SD or 300SDL...

Yep, this one came off an 85 300sd. The only down side is the filter is spendy, but the better performance is worth it!

Too bad you have to pay $45/filter. You should have used a Fram 8037 instead.

Haven't yet, the po put a new filter in before I got it. Thanks for the other option.

Just a quick update, I swapped in the rebuilt injectors from the old motor yesterday and am going on a 500+ mile trip next week, so I will have some freeway mpg's to report. The old injectors looked well worn and coked up. So far it runs WAY better. While they were out I ran a comp test- all @ 400 - SWEET!
