Why would you need a solid axle swap?
Depends on the transmission and on your preference. If the Cummins has an NV4500 behind it, use it. If it has a Getrag behind it, I'd use that too. Personally, I'd use whatever is bolted to the Cummins for simplicity...it's already on there! I can't say I'm a fan of ZF's behind diesels though... I've had enough trouble with them behind 7.3 IDI's...

About the only thing I could think would be the third member interfering with the starter and clutch, depending what tranny it is, but the crossmember isn't an issue from my experience... A mild lift might resolve the third member issue though...and a straight axle is definitely easier to lift. That's about all I can think of...

you dont have ifs. you have a TTB setup. the clearance issue youve heard of is not the starter hitting, its the oil pan. the cummins oil pan is really deep. but like fummins said, a lift will clear that problem. and its all about how to motor is positioned that will determine the clearance issues. you can also position the engine higher up to clear that, but then you will run into your trans hitting the cab or the engine hitting the hood. i dont know how roomy the fords are but i know i had major clearance problems with my ifs in my chevy

Mine had the twin I-beam 2wd front suspension, and the pan cleared my crossmember and everything just fine. It took a shoehorn to get it in the first time, but it sets in there with the stock crossmember just fine. I wasn't aware that the 4wd TTB crossmembers were any different. I did change mine to solid axle though by putting the Dana 61 out of the Dodge donor truck in it. I also used the transmission, Getrag 360, from the Dodge donor truck.
