My Cummins swap. Lots of pictures
Hello everyone. I have been looking and reading for long time, but don't think I have ever posted here. I just wanted to share my conversion with you guys and get a little feedback from you. I have a 1981 Chevy 1/2 ton 2wd pickup that I have installed a 5.9 Cummins into. The trucks specifications are as follows:
1981 Chevy short bed 2wd
1995 Cumins 5.9
NV4500 trans
s300/s400 compound turbo setu (home built)
#5 fuel plate
181 deivery valves
4000 rpm Governer spring set
60# valve springs
Aftermarket AFC springs
17* timing
PDI 3 piece exhaust manifold
Full 5" exhaust system
10.5" 14 bolt Rearend with 3.42 gears
Rear disc brake swap
Yukon Grizzly locker
Custom 4" diameter drive shaft
1 ton front A frames and springs
4 core radiator
Twin 14" electric fans
Valair clutch
Air to liquid intercooler
Bosch intercooler coolant pump
2001 Dodge Ram 2500 aluminum wheels
The truck is almost finished. I need to finish up the wiring and a few other misc items, but it has been driven down the street. It makes plenty of power and with it's "Light" weight of only 4400# it is a blast to drive. Here are a few pics of the truck, I hope you enjoy. feel free to ask any questions you may have. Criticism is always appreciated.

Well at one time I had a 502 BBC in there. That looked out of place as well LOL. Thanks, but I can't think of anything I need at the moment for the truck. If you were closer I could possibly find something, but shipping parts all that way would get costly.

Here is California we will only be smogging 1998 and never Diesel pickups, so you have nothing to worry about. You won't need to pass any smog inspections. Swap your 1970 over and have a blast. My 81 was origenally a diesel so I have never had to smog it and according to my California smog manual (Yes I have a smog license) we will not be doing anything to pre OBDII diesel vehicals (Pre 1998). If you have any questions about doing a swap, feel free to contact me. I'll share any information I have with you. My swap was not as simple as it could have been, mainly because I went with a heavy 5.9 rather then the 3.9 and I started with a 1/2 ton pickup so I had to swap over all the front suspension and the rear diff. Then I went with a compound turbo setup, so fitment was a little bit of a headache. A simple stock 5.9 swap would have been a little easier (Fitting the 5" downpipe for the twin turbos was a pain) and if I had started with a 3/4 ton truck there would have been no need to upgrade the rear diff or the front suspension. Good luck with the swap. Keep in touch.
