Sorry for the slow reply, my computer was busted. The tricky part about putting one of these little engines in just about anything is the fact that the block skirt extends 5" below the crankshaft centerline and the oil pan is another 3.5" It is not very big in any other direction and is light so that it won't screw up your front end or handling. Should be just fine for a little Jeep. I never rode in one that you would want to go very fast with anyway. I know it is a plus not to have too much weight on the front end. I just got back from a trip to Iowa City, IA. 1900 miles. Averaged 29 mpg and 58 mph moving average. Had strong headwinds both ways but thankfully it wasn't uphill both ways so it could have been worse. If I was doing it again, the engine swap that is, I would make an adaptor plate out of 1/4" steel and build it up with 1/2" steel where the tranny bolts on. I think that would work just fine and would save a lot of bucks. The starter bolts on the front of the plate so that wouldn't be a problem. 27000 miles so far with no problems so I expect it to continue that way.

You did a damn good job man, it kinda reminds me of the old diesel rangers of the 80's... Only more reliable.

Very well done, Jake. I'm glad your keeping the updates coming, hopefully it will last you for another 400,000 miles. My brother is actually a mechanic as the local New Holland/Kubota dealer, maybe we should try to do something similar to his '88 Toyota 1/4 ton.

Default Kubota Ranger swap update

No news is good news. I now have 40,000 miles on this thing with no problems what so ever, that is, if you don't count the persistently chirping serpentine belt which has pissed me off ever since day one. No problem, just noise. Nothing has changed, fuel mileage, boost or whatever. I change the oil every 3500 or so and never have to add any. Still doing the same type of driving and as you can see, quite a bit of it. From my stand point I would have to call a complete success. My engine heater that I wrote about in an earlier post went to hell so I did without all winter, it never failed to start and that is pretty outstanding for sitting outside in a ND winter. The block heater that you are supposed to use on these goes in the back of head and I couldn't get one in without pulling the engine. I have found a better heating element that I can put in my home made heater when I get around to it. Hopefully before winter comes again. I really enjoy driving it, no noise except for a little exhaust bark, no muffler, sounds really good. Just a little louder when the cruise gooses it up on hills. I appreciate your interest and comments Jakebilt

I have seen alot of helpful and alot of incredible stuff on this site but finally I have seen the incredibly helpful thing I was looking for. ...This is an awsome project. I am glad you have the mad skills needed to do this because it has spurred me along on finding another project. Thanks... and as for that belt chirp I know this might sound wierd to you but a friend of mine who I use to bounce things off of , we both were mechanics, told me a neat thing.. and it work great. Put a couple of dabs of dielectric grease on both sides of the belt. THis will stop the chirp for a long time... Thanks agian for the cool ideas...

This is one helluva cool build. You could never do this where I live. A small industrial diesel engine with no smog controls into a vehicle that was originally a heavily smog controlled gasser - and not even offered with a diesel engine of any kind?

You'd never be able to register and license it. I envy you guys in states with no smog testing. If I lived where you live I can thing of all KINDS of cool diesel projects I'd like to tackle.

I had to base my conversionon a 25 year old rig (emissions testing exempt) to get around the problem...

Default Kubota Ranger update

I now have 76000 miles on this conversion and just got done rebuilding the transmission. Found out at this late date that my adaptor was misaligned by .005". That is the outer limit for misalignment and I guess it didn't do too bad, it has a total of 130,000 miles on it so maybe it was going to crap out anyway. Cost me $1000 but that is the only problem I've had so far. I had to have a couple of offset dowel pins made to line it up and it is now right on the money. I have been averaging 33 to 34 mpg all summer with a high of 36 but I hardly ever go over 55 mph. Only got 28 or 29 at 60 or 65 but just can't hardly go that fast around here anymore cause of traffic. We are in a super oil boom around here, think California gold rush on wheels. I replaced the clutch disc when I had it out, the splines were getting pretty worn. Also had one broken spring on the hub. Input shaft was fine but I plan on replacing the disc every 100,000 or so. 4 banger diesels hammer hell out of transmissions. I try not to let it rev to slow, thats when it hammers the most. I am pretty happy with the whole deal. Except for the aforementioned catastrophes it has been trouble free and paid out a long time ago due to the increase in fuel prices since I got it running
