Except Balance, Handling, and other part longevity! Fitness for purpose is an important factor. If he had plans to swap axles to D60's go with huge tires etc, etc, then it might be OK to run a 1200lb engineand Trans in the front of a 3000lb truck with a 90in wheelbase. But he might not want to run anything larger than 235's he might want it low (for a 4x4) and he might not want to rebuild the jeep from one end to the other. He likes how the other truck performs now he wants to make the YJ perform similarly. Driving A vehicle 85f/15r weight balance is less than ideal!

I would look for a Toyota diesel out of a BJ series. Not a lot in the Us, but some in canada and all over the world. They will work with an FJ t-case, that would be offset front and rear for your axles. Or, run a full Yota drivetrain with FJ axles front and rear. With a set of Long's, they are close to dana 60 strength. That what I was going to fun in my FJ until I decided to run propane on the stock inline 6, but Im adding a set of turbo's to make use of the 105 octane.

If getting any part wouldn't take a month to get, that would be a decent engine (albeit underpowered) to use. They are anvil reliable! Part availability is a severe handicap though.

i am new to this site and hope i am not too late for this but anyways, you were talking about mercedes 240 d.in my opinion it is underpowered and you wouldnt be happy with it. i put 3.0l td out of 85 mercedes in my 87 jeep wrangler and was able to adapt to my jeep transmission and was able to keep all parts stock between jeep yj and mercedes td. i can tell you one thing this jeep is blast i have put around 800 miles on it so far and only thing i see as disatvantage is my gear ratio that i am still trying to tweek in and tune to my liking since jeep ax-15 trans has high ratio in 5 th gear, but you can still drive it in 4th with no problem but fuel economy drops down a lot.if i take this thing easy i get 32 mpg but if i drive litle agresivly than i get around 22-23 mpg.still it is pretty good for jeep. your idea is great and is very posible to do I HAVE ONE TRUST ME.best part of all is when you start engine and people just look at you funny.

definitely not too late in the discussion. welcome to DB and thanks for you input. 22-32mpg is dang near as good as the little hippy cars that are 'saving our planet'...

that there is awesome!

Isuzu also makes a 4 cylinder diesel. I don't know much about it but I know it was in the troopers.

This is my factory Jeep Cherokee 2.5TD engine. Was built from 96' to 2001. It's a common engine swaps in YJ's over here. It's a direct fit to the AX15 tranny. Just adapt the engine mounts and go. I have seen this engine also in the US as a project. Just do it!
