I'm just going to start this post off like this. Not bashing engine choice. What ever floats your boat. What are the benefits of the 6.5 engine? I know it's a lower torque motor and would be more friendly in the s10 you have it in. But I just wonder the thoughts you have on that engine. Because I am sure that I and the Internet both have the wrong opinion. Look forward to your reply.

6.5s were designed to be a cheap, efficient, durable work horse. Was never intended to be a high hp engine. Truth is when I bought my one ton I didnt want or could afford a round bodied silverado with a dmax. I wanted a mechanical injected diesel. If the solenoid has power and there is fuel in the tank it runs. There is a reason the presidential limo and humvees have 6.5s. Simple and reliable. It surved me incredibly well in my one ton towing a two car trailer and every belonging my family has from washington state to iowa when me moved. Im a huge fan of 6.5s, sorry you and the internet dont share that opinion but mine have never let me down. Another plus is it was designed to fit anywhere a 350 small block fits. Why run a big dollar big power dmax when I love and already own 6.5s? 6.5s have a bad rap because of the hp race and owners and mechanics not understanding them. As for me and my fleet, I couldnt ask for better engines. I have two 6.5s a mechanical pump and a electronic pump and my wife drives a 16 silverado with the new 5.3.

Whats wrong with a 300hp diesel anyways? id like to add that im a bit of a prepper in someways and I dig an engine that will burn any fuel, unaffected by emp stuff, doesnt require def or have any emissions equipment, or have any exotic/expensive parts. Truck has a semi cabin invertor in it and now dual batteries. I could set it to high idle and power my home (partially) through an emergency or dump any filtered oil/some gas in the tank to keep it running if **** ever hit the fan.

Wifes cluster, 617 I found abandoned at a local trans shop (can make it mine if I want, and I do ), and whats left of my suburbans gov loc.

I like my 6.5's but enjoy a good romp in the dmax. Problem is all my 6.5's walk away from my dmax when used for dd and tow just as well. Unloaded does show the difference new tech makes. If I push my dmax hard enough to out run my 6.5l towing heat and the tranny are at risk, if I push it hard enough to keep up with my 6.5 on dd duty then it gets crap for mileage, if I try to out run the dmax unloaded my 6.5 gets sad.

That right there gives me a different perspective on this engine. Thanks for the information. You actually bumped it up a few knoches for me.

7.3 and gm 6.2/6.5 shared the same db2 pump with different internal settings.



12v



Different strokes for different folks. When the 6.5 came out it was a direct competitor for the engines that were out at the time. But when the hp race started gm ditched it for the more modern dmax platform. My mechanical diesel has a 6.2 governor spring which raises its max governed rpm to ~4200 and its internal fuel limit turned up all the way which people claim bumps it to 300hp~ with a mechanical wastegate set at 15 psi. My electronic pump has mechanical boost control (also at 15 psi) with a 4 inch exhaust, intake, and a heath chip of unknown rating. The suburban hauls like a champ and i have never been in a situation where i have wanted more power. The s10 feels sluggish and im trying to figure out what happened to that engine during the wreck/storage cause it doesnt run like it used to. Same gearing in the s10, 3.73 which is rpm limited to ~110 mph so its not a wierd gearing issue (suburban is also a 4l80e and 3.73. Im not sure what the 1 ton was).

The almighty 12v cummins ran almost a 1k rpm less so had to be geared less favorably and made nearly identical amounts of hp and tq. cummins max tq 1500, 6.5 1800, 7.3 2000 not much low rpm advantage there either.

No one likes that sharp high speed governor drop off at high rpm, fix your 6.5 with a 6.2 governor

i need this in my life.. just sayin

The "Marine" 310 hp. 6.5L injection pump Part Number is DB2831-5722.
The pump uses a four plunger rotor with .310" diameter plungers. Full load is 3,600 rpm. The test plan shows 3,500 rpm 73.5 to 76.5 mm/3 maximum output. High Idle is 4,100 rpm.
