Sport trac 2.8l cummins
14 Attachment(s)
Ok so I found this sport trac and couldn't pass it up. It has 115000 miles and the timing chain broke. So ill be continuing the swap I was doing on the ranger here. The motor is a 2.8l direct injected wet sleeved with a ve injector pump. The trans will either be a m5r2 from a 1997+ f150 or a aod from a older f150 or bronco I haven't decided yet. Here are some pic of what I have so far.Attachment 31986Attachment 31987Attachment 31988Attachment 31989Attachment 31990Attachment 31992Attachment 31994Attachment 31996Attachment 31997Attachment 31998redneck leakdown test #3 couldn't hold anything Attachment 31999Attachment 32000Attachment 32001Attachment 32002
So this is where I'm at now. About half my rebuild parts are in ill post more pics when they come in |
That's going to be a cool swap. Is it a 2wd or 4wd? I don't remember if you mentioned that. Looking ahead to my next endeavor I'm looking at a Jeep Liberty with the Kubota
|
It is 4x4. I think a liberty would be alot of fun with a v2203
|
I'm going to have to do a little research though. One to make sure it will fit which I think it will and two...to get the automatic transmission to function with the kubota. Should be enough jeep gurus out there to steer me straight.
How would you go about adapting a non electronic tranny to that transfer case in that sport trac? Or could you go to an older t-case as well |

Well it looks like I'm going auto. If I use a aod the od is .66 and with the tires on it its perfect with my 4.10 rear gears. 1800 at 61 mph and 71 mph at 2100 and I won't have to spend money on a trans controler. The factor stall on the aod converter is 1600-1800 so should be perfect for my motor. My torque spikes at 1800 and peaks at 2200. And better yet the f150 4406 transfercase will fit without cutting the fram and the front drive shaft will fit with a 1330 unjoint and. The 5.0 explorer crossmember will bolt right up to the aod!Attachment 31973

Bought my intercooler tonight! I hate spending money but it will be nice to havin to spend so much time tring to make I tear cooler lines

That's a nice kit. I plan on a similar one but with a different intercooler.
|
Thanks. I would rather have a larger one but I really don't want to cut my radiator support up. So ill run this one up high behind the grill and another one I have down low between the recovery hooks. So instead of returning through the engine bay it will loop behind the bumper and return passenger side/ same side

Well I got a great deal on my trans. 83 bucks withs converter flex plate dust shield and. Tv cable. It looks to have been rebuilt

Do you think this transmission and transfer case setup would work behind the kubota in a ranger?
I've also been pondering a transverse mounted kubota in a ford escape wondering g what the possibilities would be there. The axle ratios are 2.91 and if the motor would fit that could be a mileage king! |
I think It could be good for a kubota. I kick around the escape idea but the 2001 escape 5speed we had was geared with 3.90 I think it would tach 3000 at 65
|
2500 is about 65 in my '08 Escape 5 speed... although the 4WD version makes me think about using something like a Thunderbird IRS. It's rear steer though so you've got a rack about where an oil pan should be.

My custom converter is in woohoo |
If you don't. Mind my asking how much did the custom converter set you back? I was quoted over a thousand. Dollars. For the aw4 in my jeep, then some one said they could do one fot 400$, but then i went another direction and used a stock converter

Well I got the aod in today I got real lucky the trans mount from the 5r55e fit the aod and the trans fit with the existing cross member! It's a tight fit but it fits. Ill need to clearance the trans tunnel just a little but I have enough room to use the sae to small block ford adapter from Phoenix. I have 2 inches to spare. |
today turned out to be an expensive day, I managed to break one of my injectors while removing it from the head, it was seized in place. I did some calling around and detroit wanted $185 each, seattle injector quoted me $135 each if I bought 4. We popped tested the old ones and found 100bar difference so $540 for 4 new injectors.

Are the pistons aluminum? What is the black thing on the side of the piston?
|
Yes the pistons are forged alum. And I'm pretty sure they are Teflon coated

I made a little progress today I installed the body lift the adaptor and set the motor where I want in. Attachment 31822

man you are moving along quick. I don't know much about the AOD. It is NON electric? Correct? How does the TC lock up? What year is your AOD?
That Is the first Phoenix adapter I have seen outside of their website. Did you have to get anything else from Phoenix? Crank adapter?. Very cool to be able to buy an adapter Looking good |
Thanks my aod came from a 91 bronco but has been rebuilt AOD transmissions don't have a lock-up converter like most other automatic transmissions. Instead, everything's done inside the transmission. They employ a small, centrally-located input shaft that engages the front hub of the torque converter, and connects to the direct clutch hub. This clutch is engaged in 3rd and 4th gears, effectively making a "locked" 1:1 input shaft-to-crankshaft speed ratio. I bought the sae to sbf adaptor from Phoenix and I'm waiting for the flywheel adaptor. They had to custom make it from a cummins 3.3 adaptor. Odd offset
|
I can't wait to see how that trans works behind the diesel!

what accessory was in the spot that you removed, to enable you to trim the timing cover?
Did you get your crank adapter? Did it change / reduce the amount of bolts to hold it all together? Are you using any flywheel? Or just the flex plate and TC? |
1 Attachment(s)
It was the aux hydraulic pump drive that i eliminated. My flywheel adaptor came today. It uses the. #10 clutch on my existing flywheel and mimics the crank of a small block ford. Attachment 31787
|
Oil is primed and ready for daylight to run. I have 50psi oil pressure with just the starter!
|
So your stack will be the original diesel flywheel, crank adapter, flexplate, and then the TC?. And the crank adapter gives the small diameter side to the flexplate? and the large diameter bolts to the existing flywheel?
Do you have a picture of the stack? My Kubota's oil pressure is dropping a bit after it is good and warmed up, but it does not seem to be using oil. Funny during the day you can not see any smoke , but at night when someone's headlights are close behind me I can see smoke in my side mirror. have fun with the test run |

Attachment 31784 I painted the tie downs red. I thought it would look nice Attachment 31785 Unfortunately I will have to pull the injector lines and either strip and clear them or paint them black. The paint started to flake when I was working with them |
