You can coat them or even the entire engine with MinWax Helmsman to give it some resistance from the fuel breaking down the enamel paint.

That looks quite a bit easier than measuring and building your own adapter. Did you do the math for the depths and setbacks, or did phoenix adapters have the math already? Plus a big bonus would be using the vehicle OE flywheel/clutch or flex plate. Are you going to be able to get to the TC bolts thru that little gap in the very bottom?
If/when I do the next Kubota, I am pretty sure I will try and buy a phoenix adapter, mostly so I can use the jeep or dodge OE flywheel and clutch. I am not very trusting of my Kubota flywheel yet, but 1500 miles and it has not grenaded yet.
Looks very good so far

Dieselxj. I make adapter for small block Chevy ,small block ford, and jeep 4.0 adapters. Along with some others. They work with the stock flywheels and starters etc

I have to say that Engine sounds Healthy. :)

rancherman 12-15-2014 08:10 PM

curious, is your VM engine the pushrod version of the 2.8 crd put in about 10,000 jeep libertys for the NA market?
It'd be wild if their adapter for the CRD would've bolted up the rear of your engine.. direct transmission bolt up. might've lightened up the total weight..

Nice swap, I was drawn here (bombers) looking for info on the 3.3 cummins (komatsu) swap.. 'Gleaning all info' LOL

Rangmar 12-15-2014 09:51 PM

This engine shares nothing in common withh the liberty motor other than the manufacture. It has individual cyl heads full wet sleeves and a tunnel bore block as well as timing gears instead of a belt Ect. Ect. I could have orderd a adaptor from Europe from the 2.5 jeep cherokee xj that is the same basic block but this was cheaper thanks for the compliment

rancherman 12-16-2014 11:13 PM

Only reason I asked, was because Perkins, cummins. ( these I know of) respectively, share the same bolt pattern in the rear of the block. ie; any adapter that fits a Perky will fit any perky.. and same with cummins. (within it's family) I would've thought it was kind of a Corporate thing, for interchangeability within brands.
I swapped a 903 v8 cummins this fall with a 855, and those 'adapters' were the same.

I orderd a turbo last night. I figured it would be worth experimenting with. It from a crd liberty And its variable vein. Attachment 31772

usedkubotaman 12-17-2014 07:12 PM

How will you control the variable vein?

Rangmar 12-17-2014 08:03 PM

It's controlled by boost with the boost can on the turbo. I may need to make a boost controller to fine tune it but should be at 26.5lbs of boost as it sits

lipitor.

Sorry, couldn't help myself.... you mean vane? :) :) That's how I originally wound up on this site, looking for controllers for an HE351V.

Looks good as always Rangmar.

usedkubotaman 12-18-2014 05:54 PM

Huh, I've not seen a VV turbo that didn't require some type of electronic controller. That could be a great way to get significantly more power!

Rangmar 12-18-2014 07:44 PM

There are actually several out there that are vgt or vnt controlled by a boost can. The computer does control them but no differently than how the computer controls the wastgate on a wastegated turbo. The boost line would go to a small control valve just at it would on any other turbo car and the computer controls boost at low rpm but the spring in the boost can is designed for a set max so running the line directly to the can would net 26.5lbs max on this turbo but maybe not i guess I'll find out lol

I made a little progress today on the accessory brackets. Don't be to harsh this is in the mock up stage. But any input is welcomeAttachment 31747

It doesn't appear to me that the belt makes enough contact with the crank pulley, it'll slip.

redveloce 12-29-2014 12:06 PM

I also wonder about the power steering pulley. Perhaps an idler between and above the PS and crank pulleys to create more wrap?

Beagle 12-30-2014 09:02 AM

ihttp://i.fixya.net/uploads/images/c17hydro_174.gif

Taurus setup is kinda similar to yours? I'd want close to 1/2 pulley wrap on everything.

I started roughing in the electrical. I'm going to keep as much of it intact as possible. I like the idea of using to obd to pull things like intake temp and Ect. I Got lucky the orig. harness fits in between the intake on water manifolds. I still need a tap to retap for the ford water temp sensors and I need to make a bracket for the tps.

Your belt system looks better, i'm a little concerned that the spring loaded tensioner may cause you some headaches. I tried one on my IDI truck, the stroke of the engine beat it to death. I eventually went to a fixed tensioner. Hopefully that engine won't cause the same issues.

handcannon 01-04-2015 08:04 PM

All the GM 6.2 and 6.5 motors had that kind of tensioner. I have never had any problems with the tensioner on my 6.5, and I have never heard of anybody else with any problems. Of course the 6.2/6.5 is a V8 and the Kubota is an I-4 so the harmonics could be different.

Very productive day. I bought a 4406 transfercase from a 01 f150 a front drive shaft from 97 f150 the slip yolk from a expedition and a driveshaft from a mustang. Or at least I think a mustang. I pulled one from a 02 mustang the found 1 already pulled at the register in better shape and an inch longer. Everything is in and fits. No custom driveshafts, yeah! I have to pickup 2 new conversion ujoints tomorrow and the best thing is the transfercase shift motor from my sport trac tcase fits the f150 tcase just like factory so I won't have to cut the harness. Here's a pic comparing the t cases

Made a bit of progress today. I cleaned repainted and put new unjoint a in the drive shafts. I orderd 2 1330 conversion joints 1 for the front diff and 1 for the rear slip yolk to drive shaft. The rear slip yolk was a double cardone from a expedition that I cut the tie down ears off of. Attachment 31716

Well I had a bit of a set back. I spent the better part of a day working on my turbo adaptor. I got it all finished, started on the oil lines and went to reclock it and it won't ! I didn't think about the control rod going threw the cartridge to the exhaust housing. So you can't reclock to get the oil feed and drain in the correct positions. I found a gt2256v from a sprinter on cl so I bought it and am working on my adaptor for it.

I got the intercooler done yesterday. And I got to drive it today Did a bunch of trial and error on adjusting the tv rod. First it was only 1st gear then it was 1-2-3 in one shift lol. After a bit fine tuning I got the shifts close. 1-2 is great 2-3 is a bit funky the 3-4 and 4-3 3-2 are all great. 2-3 will shift to early when going slow on side streets sometimes the it will hesitate getting on the freeway I'm sure a bit more fine tuning will take care of it.

Now on another note. The turbo is amazing!!! 15lbs boost pretty much off idle and 20 lbs really quick est 15-1600 rpm on the freeway at 65 if you roll into the throttle it will pull 30 lbs almost instantly without downshifting

Rangmar 01-28-2015 11:26 PM

Alright put some miles on it and I have it shifting great. I do have a bit of noise from my converter but will worry about that in a few days. I used the boost can from the original turbo to work my vnt and it works great. I filled up to the brim drove 97.8 miles and it only took 2.68 gallons!!! 36.49 mpg. I know its only 100 miles and that's not that accurate but I'm really happy about what I'm seeing so far. With the boost can I see 20psi spike then it settles in at 17psi I have yet to see over 1000 deg egt

Rangmar 02-02-2015 04:02 PM

Well I put 5-600 miles on it so far mpg seems to be staying in the 30-35 range. I've been using my gps to track miles but I'm not sure it is all that accurate (working on the speedo)I have taken it on a few small trips 1 150 mile round trip and 1 was 230 miles And a few small 30-40 mile drives. The power is great the egt wont go over 1000 still no smoke and it will run 80-85 great. It is running about 2250 at those speeds. 75 is best. I'm pulling the trans this week to figure out why I have a converter whine as well as fixing a oil leak in the front cover. Other than that I'm really liking the truck. You can really feel the tq pulling the hills and I'm impressed with the response of the turbo. Ill have some pics later in te week

usedkubotaman 02-02-2015 07:05 PM

Sounds great! So the auto trans is behaving properly?

Rangmar 02-02-2015 09:35 PM

Yep the trans is great. Took a little adjusting but it shifts great. I had a bit of converter whine and called the converter shop that built it. He's pretty sure he knows what the issue is but we'll find out tomorrow. I got everything pulled back apart today so I can work on getting the elec fan in tomorrow as well as the new powerstreering reservoir and clean up the wiring vacuum lines and get the crank pickup installed to I have tach and cruise control, hopefully this one is a bit more computerized than the ranger. It has abs and all the other goodies so I don't even have a speedo right now but Im pretty sure it should all come to life once I get that hooked up. And if your curious factory timing is 12.5 deg. On this one and my kubota was a 9 deg motor
