Default First Diesel 7.3 Powerstroke

I just recently bought my first diesel truck, a 2002 F250 with a 7.3. The truck has a cold air intake, a 4" MRB Turbo Back Exhaust, and an Edge Juice With Attitude chip & programmer. The original owner tried to stack another programmer with the existing one and managed to kill the trucks computer. He took it to a ford garage and had them replace the trucks computer and they disconnected the programmer & chip. I see how to re connect the chip/programmer, it looks like they just un-plugged the 2 sensors by the turbo and the connection to the computer near the a/c accumulator. My question is, is there a way to test the programmer and chip to see if they are ok? I would like to reconnect the existing chip/programmer and use it, but do not want to ruin another computer on the truck, the bill from the original owners mistake was 1200.00. My thinking is I would be best off buying a new programmer and chip to be certain that I will not cause damage to the trucks computer, but at the same time if the existing programmer/chip is still ok Id like to use it. Any suggestions?
