New Here Need Help......Drivers Rear Brake Locked Up
Hello,
I'm new here and not sure of how you do things around here.
I'm broke down and need help.
I have a 2000 Ford F250 Diesel 4X4 and the drivers side rear brake is dragging terrible.
I backed into a parking spot, shut it off, came back out and headed for home.
It acted like it had no power and something was draging it down. (i did not use the emergency brake)
After a couple of miles I could smell it. I stopped and checked and the brake was dragging. The smell was unmistakeable and the rim was hot. I limped it home another 4 miles and it's parked in the drive.
Is there a quick fix to get this to release?
The truck has antilock brakes.
Thanks,
Greg Heims

Have you used the parking park lately , not necessarily just the last time ?
Is it disk brakes ?
Either one you can get a hold of the cable to pull slack towards the axial , then with drums there is a rubber plug [ oval about 1 1/4" long ] inside is a adjuster star , undo tension .
If disk brakes , possible locked up caliper .

Greg,
It definitely could be the caliper, but my money is on the brake hose. Often times they deteriotate on the inside and cause this kind of problem. Pull the hose off the caliper and see if it releases.
EDIT - sorry I skimmed your post - I now see its a rear brake.

IIRC your truck has rear disc brakes. My guess is you either have a stuck caliper or the parking brake shoes are stuck. Your parking brake shoes are inside the "hat" of the rear rotors. You'll need to remove the caliper and rotor to access them. I would bet that if your parking brake shoes are the culprit it's because you have a leaking axle shaft seal. It could also be that the little star adjuster for them is malfunctioning and has let the shoes go all the way out.
Either way this is going to require some tear down and inspection.

A member on another board had this same problem, and it ended up being his caliper and it took him a while to get a stock one as they are no longer carried or something.. i'm not sure, but coulda just been him..
definately sounds like the caliper is stuck
I'm fairly certain you have disk brakes, but if not, check the adjusting screw inside the drum brakes

Thanks for the replys.
Yes it's disc's and I never use the parking brake. So I'm suspecting the caliper hanging up.
I'm just gald I won't be needing it for the next week as I'm at home...had a minor surgery today....but that still dosen't get my truck fixed.

At least you have the good forutne of having disk brakes, much easier to work on. You should know as soon as you pull the tire what the problem is. If you can't see the calipers locked on then you know it's e-brake. If the calipers are that locked on then you will also see the evidence rotor. May need to replace that rotor if it got that hot to, I'm sure it's warped.
