96 12v doesn't run right
96 cummins 12 valve, was going up a hill, and started losing power, tons of gray smoke out the exhaust, knocking like crazy, idles low, not a head gasket, not a cracked block, all valves move fine, no backfires. help???
the only things i can think of right now are injector issues, or timing possibly?
anyone know how to test the injectors on a 12v?

sounds like you blew a tip off of an injector most likly water in the fuel done it, crack the lines open one at a time and see if one cylinder cleans up the smoke if it does pull that one out and look at it, it will be easy to see if it is messed up

mabye you list a turbo? of a turbo oil seal. check all your boost tubes and piping to make sure you didnt blow a line off and your loosing boost. check play in your turbo impellar shaft.

mabye you lost a turbo? or a turbo oil seal. check play in your impellar shaft and oil in your turbo housing. check all the boost tubes to make sure you didnt blow a tube or boot off.

blown turbo wouldnt be causing it to run like **** at idle tho, and, all fluids are fine. oil isnt low, and neither is the coolant. it has been driven about 10 miles since it went to ****, just so i could get it to my shop.
im still not convinced that its not the injectors, and, im a little wary of cracking the injector lines with the truck running, because theres around 3800psi in those lines...
could having too much water in the fuel cause it to run like this?
clogged fuel filter?
bad injection pump or supply pump?
the smoke comming out the exhaust is gray, not black, not white, possibly a very slight bluish tint, but, not like its burning oil...

Cracking your injector lines with the truck running is fine. Only a small amount of fuel comes out. Just don't take the nut off all the way, just back it off a turn or so.

anyone think that it could just be a mega clogged fuel filter / water seperator?
previous owner had the vent tube next to the fill neck unhooked, and just open right off the tank for who knows what reason...

A blown injector tip is not the only thing that can go wrong with an injector. It could have a broken spring which would affect the timing on one cylinder and let it pour too much fuel in. That would cause all the symptoms you described. The only way to tell if an injector has that kind of problem is to take it to a shop and have it pop tested. It could still look good and be bad.

i had a super clogged fuel filter on my d max and it just fell on ths face whenever i wanted to accelerate but no smoke. it sounds like your getting too much fuel. or its way out of time
